Fixed or mechanical for crossbow?

Finally got my crossbow dialed in and am needing to pick up some broadheads. Just on the fence between going fixed or mechanical. Anyone got any suggestions as what I should look at? Last time I was at basspro guy in the archery department was talking up the rage hypodermic.

I get a little nervous on mechanical at times. With my bow I have had good results as well as 1 time where they flat didn't open on a deer. Dont' know if it was the angle or what, but definitely didn't hit the shoulder.

I would find well established broadhead from a reputable company. To many heads out there that seem to switch designs/company folds or sells out......making it hard to find what your satisfied with 5 years later.

I have been overly impressed with NAP Killzones out of our bows and crossbows. They sell practice blades for them so you can get dialed in especially with the Trophy Tip version (rather than the Cut On Contact). They have retainer clips, but my crossbow is so dang fast, it will freaks me out about the thought of the blades coming open, so I put a dental rubber band on them on that fast crossbow specifically, not on anything else we shoot. We have yet to lose a deer with them. The 2", 2 blade cut expandable has been around long enough now to show it is devistating. The problem with Rage (only big one) was blades coming open mid-flight. NAP owns the patent on the retainer clips (came out in the Spitfires originally). Since starting blood tracking, I have clearly found that large, 2 blade expandables are making deer more recoverable than smaller and/or fixed blade heads. I think the proof is pretty clear with the deer that have been recovered from bad shots all over the nation in the past 5-7 years.

I liked Spifires because of their accuracy, and never planned to switch. Seeing things with my own eyes and then watching the same happen nation wide, I slowly jumped on the train.

Pick your own brand. But the design is proven.

Kill a deer with a butter knife broadside through both lungs. The question is, what is the result when something goes wrong. When you make a mistake in the heat of the moment and want to blame it on your equipment. WILL your equipment cover your mistake??

If a guy says he has only ever doubled lunged deer, and always recovered every deer he has loosened an arrow on, then he has not shot very many deer. I have yet to meet that guy who has ice in his viens and has dropped 50+ bow kills straight, double lung.

Lots of good heads out there these days. I personally like the shwackers. On the very remote chance they don't open you still have 1" diameter cutting head. They have also proven to be very accurate for me. Admittedly I haven't killed anything with a xbow but I have zero doubt they would do the job.

Anyone shot the muzzy trocar hbx? Looks like the best of both worlds as part fixed and part mechanical with a 1 5/8 cut

I left out what broadhead I use because what I use/fly's the best/kilt a deer last year.......traveling from behind the rib and out the neck.....and looked brand new after cleaning off....
was muzzy trocar 150 grn crosskills.
Fly's great, penetrates deeper then other 5-6 heads tested.....but they apparently discontinued the 150grn.....and are still selling the 100-125grn.trocar.....and apparently going with design change of trocar hbx? Hence my post of buying established head and being careful of buying newfangled design,or like me, buying new to me broadheads on clearance:rofl:......because I cant find the 150s anywhere.

Yes there are good designed Mech. B-Heads, most of us have our favorites. Most of us knowed the poundage required. I use NAP Spitfire with my crossbows that have 300 fps or more. You need that energy fer penetration. My low poundage Excal recurve i use a fixed bladed B-head

I suppose I could spend the $$ to try the various heads but when I finally reached the 325fps level my beloved Muzzy fixed 3 blade started to plane ...so back then one of the most talked about mechanical head was the NAP Spitfire ....never lost a deer in all these years of Spitfires ....but I got it in my head that I wanted a few weeks of practicing with the broadhead I was to hunt with ...to I started using my Spits on my black target (last year) ...and my groups began to open up ...the Spits were not doing well ...at least with my xbow (465Gr/340Fps) and current Rienhart target ....always was hearing Swacker/Quick Trick yada yada yada ....so i was in a farm/ranch store and "just happened" to cut thru their archery section ...Whoa up Tonto ...Broadhead clearance sale!!!!! Quick Trick magnums 100gr ...hey that's my weight too ...well it was not priced ...so took'em to the front check out ...WOW ...sold ....long story short ...20 yards just above the bull..30 yard cut the center dead on ...40 yard 1" below dead center ...wow Batman ! ...went back and bought the other 2 closeout packs ...Now it says 1 1/8" cut ...I am thinking 4 blades 1 1/8 X 2 = 2 1/4" ....but my confidence in how this broadhead shot is a resounding confidence builder PLUS I now have a broadhead I can hunt and practice with ....I'm stoked!
