I just seen this post , but if still in need of info on this area i can help you out.

 

I shot a buck there back in 2011 on the muzzy hunt. I went way back in one of the hollers on the north side and had a hell of a drag getting him out. I went back in the spring of 14 for a managed turkey hunt with a bow. I was young a dumb and didn't want to do the typical sit in a ground blind so I was running and gunning or "bowing" on them. I had an absolute blast chasing birds all over that place and never saw another hunter.

 

I’d like to have met his skinning woman. Wasn’t she head of FEMA operations in Pulaski County?

Oneshots women did all the hunting. Oneshot and the big grin just fished in the ponds near the food plots .

 

My buddy I drew the early two day black powder hunt in October. He killed a nice 2 year old 8 point for the area. I saw some does but never had a shot opportunity. We didn't get his deer checked in until almost noon due to the fact that we went a long way in on foot and it took awhile getting the deer out. When we talked with the guys at the check station they told us the number of deer that had been killed to that point but I don't remember now what it was I just remember that it was a lot more than had been killed during that same hunt the year before. I'm not sure why that was as they had a bumper acorn crop which I would have thought would have had the deer scattered however it was dry at the time and almost every food plot had a pond with water in it close by. That's the only thing that I can think of that would have made the numbers higher.

The area is steep and rugged I can tell you that. There's a lot of food plots with rye and white clover. I'm not sure how many hunters are drawn for your hunt but I know they drew for 200 in the hunt we were on although the MDC guys said a 1/3 of them didn't show. I love Caney it's a really cool area I think.

that's disappointing to hear. at least I got a pref point out of it to try again next year.

The mule ride is at Caney mtn horse camp in Arkansas on the buffalo river.

There was an early season Alt Weapons hunt out there earlier this season in October I think. I didn't hear if it went well or not for those folks but this colder weather should be a good time! Tent camping in december? hell yeah.
