I know for the most part, that the choice between a 30-06 or 30-30 for deer hunting is personal preference. I started deer hunting this year and need to buy my own rifle. I used a 30-06, but kind of like the feel of a 30-30. Any thoughts?

The range of the 30-06 is a lot farther than the 30-30 plus the 06 can be loaded for varmints to elk. It has a wide range of choice of bullets to fit almost all gave animals in North America.
Well if a 30-30 fits you better then go with a 30-30. But as Mailman said a 30-06 has more bullet waight range then the 30-30 does. BUt more deer have been killed by the 30-30 over all calibers prolly.
When making your desision think of this thouhg. Go to the store where you will be buying you ammo and check on 1: the prisses of ammo for 30-06 compard to 30-30 and see whihc one fo the 2 they have more on the shelf. A gun is usless if you cant find ammo for it.
I my self deer hunt with a 165gr bullet for the 30-06 and this whole year counld barly find any 165gr factory made ammo. But i saw plenty of 170gr and 150gr for the 30-30
You could get one now and then later get the other caliber you dint chose to get first. Always good to have a back up gun.

I can't remember who said it, but "the 30-06 is never wrong". I don't own one simply because it doesn't interest me but I am an advocate of the cartridge. Definitely the more versatile of the two. For the person who is only going to own one big game rifle...well, the 30-06 is never wrong.
I agree with most on here as well. Go with you are most comfortable with. Ammo availability is something that you should consider as well. Can you find what you are looking for? When I was in the market for a new deer rifle I was torn between the 270 and 30-06. After walking around in the store for 45 min I went with the 30-06. The biggest thing was the availability of ammo and the versatility of the 06.
Oh by the way, a Marlin 30-30 was the first deer rifle that I purchased when I was 16 which was 20 yrs ago. The 30-30 is plenty accurate and good out to 150 yards or so.
One thing to consider if recoil is an issue, you could always do a reduced load for the 30-06 and basically allow it to have about the same performance of the 30-30. You cant do that with the 30-30. Where I hunt the ranges really don't go past 100yrds, the 30-30 would be just as good. At the end of the day, both are fine cartridges.

30-30 ammo has come a long ways. Hornday has some new poly tipped pointed bulltes that can make the 30-30 a 200 yard gun no problem. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=775263 A friend of mine killed a doe this year at 214 yards with his 30-30.
If you are only hunting whitetails inside 200 yards the 30-30 will do everything you need. If you want more range and power then upsize to the 30-06.

Get one of each![/rquote]
As do I---but like all of stated the 06 will reach out where the 30-30 is an awesome brush gun---:cheers:
Just my opinion, and I know you didn't ask but...........The question should be 30.06 or a .35 rem.
.35 has same exact frame as 30-30, lots more goodies..........
I wouldn't trade my .35 for anything in the world. with Hornady leverrevolution ammo. I had a 2 inch group at 300 yards (5 bullets), 12 inches low. 200gr bullet!!!!! Sighted in perfectly at 100........
the frame nearly aims itself when you put it to your shoulder...
First thing is where are you hunting, what types of shots do you expect to take?
If you are never gonna shoot much more than 100 yds, the 30-30 will serve you well. If you are gonna be taking longer shots, then the 30-06 hands down.
And, like everyone else has stated, the 30-06 is much more versatile.
If you have a decent bolt action 30-06, then you are good to go for any of North America's hooved game.

[/rquote]how high do you sight that 35 at 100[/rquote]
[rquote=1945756&tid=135386&author=macon county boy]whats the velocity on those hornadys they must be pretty fast?[/rquote]
dont know. I took a day to shoot one time, put a box of Remington Core-loc 200gr, and Hornady Revlution 200gr through the gun.......because I was skeptical
Not no more. the Rem's were (guessing) 3 feet low, and the Hornadys smoked them....was actually hard to believe....
My cousin, whos was a Ranger.......couldn't believe it...
I appreciate the input guys. I will probably go with the 30-06 to start. On a bit of a budget.
