Been thinking about what the kids will use when the time comes for deer hunting. Tossing around the idea of just getting a kid freindly riffle barrel for the encore instead of a whole new gun.

Any of ya have a youth hunt with one? Pros and cons?

[rquote=1503063&tid=104882&author=cummins5.9]I would tell you that you could borrow Roxy or The Swede but you'd probably crap all over that idea too.[/rquote]

Only if I can load it with a hammer!!

Really not hip on the borrowing thing anymore. Something ALWAYS seems to happen.

If you don't wanna spend Encore dollars, you can pretty much pull off the same thing with the NEF Handi Rifles.

Start em off with a .243 or something, and then you can get a new barrel fitted for your action for a lot less than the price of an Encore barrel.

I'll have to show you one of mine one of these days.....

BTW....

I own and love my Encore.:2thumbsup: But for kids, the NEF handi rifles are a pretty nice option.

I have the encore just thinkin bout getting a different barrel.

havent looked hard but quick glance I don't think there will be much difference in the price of an encore barrel vs handi rifle.

My son uses the Encore as a muzzleloader.

He will also shoot it with a centerfire barrel, but he deer hunts with the Winchester 94 .30-30.

I took it elk hunting with a .308 barrel on it.

The only complaint I had was that it is a single shot. This is a plus with new shooters, so it may not be a concern for you. I knew I wasn't going to shoot my horse taking it out of the saddle scabbard, but I was worried about a quick reload. I practiced a lot. I still wound up dropping two unfired shells in Colorado.

Based on the size me and their mother were at a young age, the stock size is the concern. The barrel and extra stock looks to be pushing over the handi rifle price. i will also have to get the forearm since I only have the Mler one.

Starting to really lean the handi rifle way. I have a few years before they will be ready for the deer, but figure I better try to buy now before chancing what the prices will be then. It can sit in the safe till then.

Honey it's for the kids, but yes I need to see if it works right!!! :D:cheers:

My daughter shoots an encore with a .243 barrel. Other than shooting off a rest, she has no difficulty with it at all. She can load, aim and fire the gun on her own; which is one of the conditions that she had to meet in order to be able to deer hunt. The gun has the standard stock and it fits her perfect. She'll be 8 tomorrow.

Ah......

Yep, you need another barrel for it then anyway.....

Get'ya a 7mm-08, .308 for it... That way you can use it too.....:D

Heck, get a 30-06, and shoot managed recoil loads for your kid....

I love my 30-06 on my Encore. Sometimes wish I had ordered a custom barrel from E. Arthur Brown instead of buying the Pro-Hunter version from T/C. The pro-hunter is 28" long, and I'd a liked a 24" barrel in hind sight....

Already have a .308. The more I read and compair pricing, the handi rifle in the 7mm-08 is winning this race.

If I can get the reloading figured out, this should all fall in place.

Thanks for the input fellas..
