As many will remember the big controversy over crossbow inclusion and the complaint that crossbows were damaging the buck population.

The wisconsin bowhunter org. And Ron Kulas and a nrb member were trying to back track inclusion. The proposal was tabled and the Nrb ordered a study. Well attached is the study. I doubt they will be seeing any changes after these results.

For the second consecutive year, hunters using crossbows killed more white-tailed deer in Wisconsin than those using vertical bows, according to 2018 preliminary data from the Department of Natural Resources.

Use of crossbows in Wisconsin has increased since a 2013 state law was passed to allow all license buyers, regardless of age or physical ability, to use the equipment for deer hunting.

For the 2018 seasons, crossbow hunters registered 46,750 deer while those using vertical bows (compounds, recurves or stick bows) registered 40,055.

The 2018 bow hunting seasons opened Sept. 15 and ended last Sunday in most of Wisconsin. An update of the data Tuesday provided the first look at the season-long harvest figures.

It was just the second time in state history (the first was 2017) the crossbow deer kill exceeded the vertical bow take.

The difference isn't a surprise since it continues a trend observed since 2014.

However, the 2018 data are notable because they show the gap is widening between crossbow and vertical bow harvests. In addition, they reveal a continuing shift in participation toward crossbows and away from vertical bows.

Crossbows are easier to use, since they are pre-****ed and ready to shoot when game appears. In addition, many are affixed with telescopic sights.

For 2018, crossbows represented 54 percent of the Wisconsin bow deer harvest, up from 51 percent in 2017, 45 percent in 2016, 39 percent in 2015 and 33 percent in 2014.

The 2018 data show crossbow users registered 25,854 bucks and 20,896 antlerless deer while vertical bow users took 21,579 bucks and 18,476 antlerless deer.

Although some hunters have criticized crossbow users of targeting only bucks, in 2018 the proportion of antlered versus antlerless deer taken by crossbow users was nearly identical to that of vertical bow users (55/45 for crossbows and 54/46 for vertical bows).

The combined bow buck kill this season of 47,433 was an 11 percent decline from the record of 53,184 set in 2017.

When it comes to total deer kill in Wisconsin, the firearm seasons (nine-day gun, muzzleloader, youth, December antlerless and Holiday Hunt) continue to dominate the harvest. In 2018, gun hunters registered 239,296 deer, of which 110,792 were bucks and 128,504 (or 54%) were antlerless.

Crossbow license sales are one of the only areas of growth among Wisconsin hunting licenses.

Wisconsin sold 88,895 crossbow licenses in 2018, an 8 percent increase, while vertical bow sales dropped 9 percent to 138,600.

Tens of thousands of additional hunters are also authorized to use crossbows in Wisconsin, including the 53,664 purchasers of the conservation patron license.

According to a DNR report, crossbow license buyers are older (average age of 52) than archery hunters (39).

In its report, the agency stated "the opportunity to use crossbows may be allowing more hunters to be retained and re-engaged in deer hunting later in life."

What Henry posted was what the current report found. NO BIOLOGICAL CONCERNS. The only concerns are social which a few loud actors express their opinions. If you dive into the report and read the charts and questions you learn that the overall group of deer hunters are not threatened by crossbow inclusion.

Just bought a crossbow for my buddies kids to use and when hunting out of gun blinds with my kids. Since owning it I have taken both bows to the woods.
So they agree they are easier ornot, asking for a friend? Friend heard they were heavy, cumbersome, blah blah blah....they are none of that, granted, they are a single shot

Oh Vic, shoot your tick totters with whatever you want. Buck stop posted this thread some back and forth, period! It's a hunting forum for goodness sake, 4 years again or whatever, all anyone had do is not deny the advantage the chin presents and we could have avoided the debates. But, many can on hear and flat lied their backsides off, they are heavy, cumbersome, blah blah blah, they are easier to kill with, period! And that's fine, but the dishonesty was not! Myself and pretty much everyone knew they would be legalized for every dip it firearms hunter to join the "archery" rank!

Kill away bud, good luck!_
This is all n good, you certainly can have yer opinion, but this here sub Forum is fer us that like to use the crossbow to hunt with. You have a great day. I am going to hunt in the morning as the cold front comes through. I just might get another tick toter fer the freezer
It doesnt bother me that 20 comments. I have a lot of crossbows and not one when outfitted with scope and rings come in at less than 9 pounds. I find that heavy. However i dont carry it much farther than in and out of the stand.

The report did state that success with a crossbow is slightly higher than compound but added this was as much about the competence of the shooter and his hunting skills. YES A CROSSBOW IS EASIER IN THE HANDS OF A LESS THAN ACCOMPLISHED COMPOUND SHOOTER. Again based on scientific facts it doesnt matter.

I sense a slight change in attitudes in the use of crossbows by many on this site. I see several new purchers as of late. Bottom line is use the legal weapon of your choice. There are zero extra points for using a tool somebody else deems better.
