Who has a 10mm

What are your thoughts on recoil velocity and grizzly get off me . Planning a bow hunt in big bear country. 45 needs a little more kick and the 44 is a pain to carry. Looking at a 1911 frame . Glock possibly.

Buddy has one, didn't think it was bad at all, little muzzle jump but certainly manageable. Cannot go wrong with a Glock, reminds me same buddy also had a 44 S&W air weight that thing had some recoil.

Just asking because I don't know ....

Does a 10 mm have big enough balls for a big bear?
they say its a prefered round

I hunt with grizzlies every year. I carry a Ruger Alaskan .454 casul. With that said I know of one already killed this year with a .357.

Make sure you use solid bullets no soft or hollow points. Another advantage to the .454 is that I carry some .45 long Colt rounds with birdshot in case something goes wrong and I need to kill a grouse or something.

421, I'm gonna say NOTHING is big enough, but. I'd wish a 10mm over a 45ACP any day of the week (due to penetration), and a 12 gauge with good slugs over both.

And while I've never shot a griz, I have shot a lot of bullets and I will echo Muley, hard non-expanding bullets will be your friend in a "bear get off me" situation.

I really enjoy the Ruger 1911 10mm I own, and my Glock can hold it's own too.

Make sure u use buffalo bore or Underwood ammo to get the most out of a 10mm. I had a glock 20sf it was very good but too big for my taste.
I have one but never shot a bear with it :D

Its a handful but not terribly bad. Glock here
We have 10 mm glocks. They aren't much more kick than a small 9.
wife has a 454 Casull.

I think I would pack the 10mm and the 454 Casull in Grizzly country.:D
I've never owned one, but have shot a few, and they aren't bad at all. The last one I fired was a 1911, and I thought it was a .45acp (my friend didn't tell me until after I fired it).

Doing some reading more 9mm kills on need too situations than any other. But I would guess that’s what a lot carry .
I need to go a range and try one . My 44 8 3/8” 240 gr recoil isn’t bad two handed . One handed best beware.

I'd say that's right 9mm is a popular round especially with the modern day powders, however no way someone who thinks there is a real probability of running into a griz should pack a 9.
I agree!

The 10mm has significant recoil if loaded to full potential. Most factory loads are loaded down to within a few fps of 40 S&W. If you shoot ammo like the WFN hard cast bullet in double tap, underwood, or buffalo bore you will get the full potential of the 10mm. My choice would be a glock 20 in a chest holster personally if forced to carry a pistol. With that said ANY pistol is under powered for bear, but the ease of carry is why it is used. Any gun beats a rock or fishing rod for protection, but it is a matter of how effective it is in reality! Nothing will reliably stop a bear unless the central nervous system is hit.

When shooting a bear with a pistol it is all about timing, You have to wait till he has your whole hand in his mouth while you are holding the pistol then start shooting!!!

Phil Shoemaker, the famed grizzly guide in Alaska, killed a grizzly last year with a 9mm and a heavy cast bullet load, but Phil is VERY experienced and wasn't even on a hunting trip. He had taken some folks fishing and the bear charged at close range. He was shooting a Smith DAO pistol.
I bought one of the first 16000 of the Colt Delta Elites back in 1987, and shot it for several years. I was lucky and got a good one, but I know a lot of folks who bought pistols that were NOT as well put-together as mine happened to be, and those pistols didn't hold up very well. Things are better now, and the makers are smarter about fitting up these newer guns. I am a 1911 kinda guy, and I prefer those over anything else, except the Witness Match pistols.

I have a Glock 20SF. I put Warren Tactical dot over dot tritium sights on it and a 22lb. recoil spring on a polished stainless steel guide rod. Underwood 220 gr. hardcast flatpoints at 1200 fps are accurate and reliable. My favorite holster for it is my Diamond D Guides Choice chest rig. I hunt in an area that has a bunch of hogs, good number of bears and the occasional mountain lion. I have deboned and quartered then packed out lots of deer in the dark and that G20 is comforting on those long hikes out of the mountains in the dark with a load of venison on your back.

I bought a Glock 357sig for my protection gun, I love it
Liking the Ruger 1911 ss.
Only thing I see wrong with the 1911 frame is they don’t hold enough booolits!!! If I had a charging grizzly bear headed at me I would need at least 30 rounds.
