Where should I go

I have a bunch of comp time I have to use this month and am looking for something to do other than sit around the house. My 11 year old has been wanting to go fishing so one thought was to try our luck at trout fishing. He has never been and I haven't been for over 10 years. We would probably just be going on a 2 day trip during the week. Would Bennett Springs be our best bet or should we try another spot? We are located in northcentral MO so really nothing close to us. Would need a cabin at wherever we go so don't know if we would be SOL with it being last minute. I do remember last trip to Bennett wife and I stayed at a nice duplex cabin.

Next question since I am no pro at trout fishing. Last time I went I rigged my line up with light line to a bobber then a very light line leader to the fly. What style bobber would i need for that or what would you all recommend?

If you're the first one there in the early morning they'll bite almost anything. I use 2 lb flouro line and sometimes a strike indicator before the fly/lure. A clear bobber will work fine.
Also would we expect much of a crowd on a Monday or Tuesday? Dates I am thinking would probably be late Sunday afternoon to mid day Tuesday.

That is a good time to go. Even if your son has fished a bit, fishing for trout is different. It sounds like you are somewhat familiar with Bennett. What zone did you fish last time, what did you use and how did you do? Also, will you be using chest waders or not?
Bennett has always been my favorite out of all of the MO trout parks.. Rock Bridge is a nice option..

If you spend 2 days at Bennett and limit early you would only be 40 or 50 miles from springfield and world of wildlife if you havent been.
The World of Wildlife Museum is awesome @
I worked on that job the last 6 weeks of construction in 2017.
Johnny was picking up th overtime. We were working 7 days a week and 13 hour days. Laughed all the way to the [email protected]
Do a float trip on the Current below the park below Montauk. Even better, make it an over-nighter and camp on a gravel bar.

It's been years since I have been and he never has. We do have chest waders to use if we decide to make the trip. Last time I fished with spinning reel and some kind of weighted bobber with a leader and dry fly attached to it. As you can see, I am no expert when it comes to trout fishing and don't have much of a clue what I am doing. Just looking for something for him and I to get away to.

Other option is just going to Springfield to a AA game. Always love those games. We went through world of wildlife the last time down there. I really liked the animal portion but could care less for the aquarium part.
If you decide on Bennett, I will sure try to give you some pointers as I'm sure others on here will as well. The first thing is to figure out which zone you want to fish in. Natural bait area or artificial. Completely different set ups and style. You can also start in Zone 3 natural bait area. Use some power bait, worms, fresh jap beetles, and catch several that way, then head to Zone 1 or 2 with a set up like you described, cork, mini jig, cast and as soon as the cork makes a slight twitch quickly react to set the hook. I like using 4 lb. flourocarbon or 3 lb. maxima. I set the hook a little harder than some and hate breaking off. :D

Floating on a river sounds like good memories in the making for you and 11 yr. old son.

Springfield Cardinal baseball game has great atmosphere. Being closer to the action with lots of foul balls increases the chance for an 11 year old to end up with one. ;)

The world is your oyster Josh. (I think its Josh, but its been a while since I've seen you in person). Let us know what you think will be the most fun for you two and more tips will be on the way.:clap:

Don't BS around. Plan a 3-day trip to this place and hire a guide. It will become an annual event which will provide you with a lifetime of memories.
Let us know what you did. I was at Bennett Sunday afternoon with my brothers. Had a great time.

I kinda agree with this, except the Gastons part.
But you should definitely try the white river with a guide it is a beautiful river and you can catch plenty of fish, and having a guide you don't have to wade fish and you will catch more fish with the possibility of a shore lunch (best way to eat trout). Also with all the rain we are having if you could stay down around the white buffalo resort you could go up the buffalo river one day for some smallies and more beautiful scenery.
