A season never passes when you don't hear one of the comments below from a guy who drags back to camp after having missed hitting a deer on Opening Day.

Please feel free to add those I might have overlooked.

1. Someone bumped my scope.

2. Bad ammo

3. Wasps (my new favorite)

4. I shouldn't have let Jim Bob borrow my gun.

5. I borrowed this gun from Jim Bob.

6. Hit a branch

7. It was too dark to see.

8. I usually don't hunt with this gun.

9. The deer jumped before the shot.

10. Who me? Must have been someone else who shot.

Well I missed a really nice one last year and when asked what happened, I simply said, "it wasn't the gun, it was the operator." I was shakin so hard I couldn't have hit the ocean from a boat. :claphands:

There is a video of that happening. Someone shooting with a muzzloader I believe. You can see the barbedwire snap in the slow motion...pretty sweet. Cant remember if he got the deer or not.

That was Stan Potts up in Iowa at Don Kisky's farm. And no, he didn't get the deer.

The fence remark was from the guy I was hunting with - and he was using a 7 Mag. Fence was intact afterwards. I asked him if he was sure it hit the fence and wasn't deflected by acorn. He didn't see the humor in it...

"He was behind the thickest brush I've ever seen and 7.62x39 just doesn't have the knockdown power!" (My 2007 excuse, to my wife, so I could buy a new deer rifle. It worked!)

It's raining so the deer were all holed up in the cedars over on the neighbors place.

**** hunters running their dogs ran off the deer during the night.

Must have been a full moon last night so the deer fed all night and bedded down for the day before the sun came up.

Kids up the road been running those ATV's again without mufflers and scaring off the deer.

The farmer across the road has been spreading turkey manure again and making the deer leave the area because of the smell.
