What are some of the things you think mdc should do to help with the Turkey population decline?

Like allowing year round harvest of ***** like some southern states do.

Actually having a management plan that focuses just on Turkey habitat. Not like the what's good for one animal is good enough for the other type management plan.

Helping more land owners focus on Turkey habitat for their land.

What are some of the things you would like the mdc to do to help with the Turkey decline?

The MDC just being truthful and forthright would resonate with me, just admit that the predators have become a huge issue and we (MDC) are not going to take on that battle publicly and encourage hunters to take the necessary steps, as we (MDC) will not expand the trapping season and encourage an assault on predators to help the turkeys.

They are being truthful by telling you they havent become more of an issue than they should be.

Nothing other than more assistance to landowners to produce great nesting and brooding habitat. Fund more research. Education for misguided individuals that believe trapping will help.

I am for education, have not heard a peep from MDC about turkey's, period. Not sure why they need more funding? Over time? What do they do now that takes up 8hrs a day 5 days a week?

Not sure why a guy in the hood who buys a samwitch should fund a landowner for a specific purpose that the landowner decimated in the first place. And as others have said who have seen numbers go down where habitat has not been lost(MTNF, southern Missouri woods etc) what is this landowner going to spend this money on?

wait, will predator trapping hurt the turkey population?
In and of itself, no. If its used in an attempt to increase turkey populations, yes.

Dafish, Jason Isabelle gives a pretty comprehensive presentation on the state's turkey population every year at the Conservation Federation of Missouri convention including ongoing studies and the results of past studies.

I hope you realize how little sense that made.
It makes perfect sense.

Guys out recreationally trapping during trapping season doesnt hurt the turkey population. No different than guys put quail or duck hunting doesnt hurt the turkey population.

Guys that are focused on turkeys that fall for the snake oil of trapping and waste time trapping that they could have used on habitat is hurting turkey populations. Many times removing a predator means more predators over all or different predators that are more impactful moving in. HABITAT insulates turkeys from all of these issues.

There have been several articles by MDC about the turkey population. You will have to look for them.

I have the last 5 of Jasons CFM presentations if you want them. This last one might be a collectable since it will be the last one Isabelle does as turkey biologist.

Ya see @fullfan. He has no idea how much effort habitat work or trapping takes. He actually thinks you have to make a choice because he does neither. Haha

Lot of tsi and habitat work is done at night so yes, trapping is done instead of habitat work.

I fully support recreational trapping as long as the fur is utilized. Never said anything different
