What scent are you using?

Thought it would be a good question to hear what scents everyone uses or has had luck with. Given there are so many variations.

Doe in estrus
Doe
Buck

What do you use and when (month) Is it worth putting scrape scent out this early ?

Happy Hunting everyone

Zero, none, nada. Anything that draws the attention of a deer's nose is my enemy! :D

I don't use them either. Play the wind and keep my clothes in a tote with cedar limbs and baking soda.

Nothing here either. Just play the wind.

I have used it to make a mock scrape for picture purposes when hunting where baiting is illegal year round. But other than that during the season I don’t use much of nothing

Back in the day I put some tinks or something similar out the first of October and every doe that came by left in a big hurry. Never done that since.

I do not do what the TV hunters do, "Hey deer, yeah you, Stop while I shoot you" which puts the deer on high alert.
During the rut I will put a scent wick with doe in heat or attractant(307) out 10-15 yards upwind of where I want the big old buck to stop, but ONLY during the rut. Which means it may be 20-30 yards away from me. Has worked many a time. During the rut, the does do not pay attention to it, most of the time.
I don’t use any scent either!! I used to try all kinds of scents but have come to realize no scent works better than anything!! Maybe baking soda and dirt, leaves and branches from were u r hunting in a tote with ur camo. But I always try to b as scent free as possible and play the wind

I used to buy scents up until about 10 years ago. I have some deers on the wall in the den (man-cave for you millenials), and I can't point to a single one that a commercial scent helped me kill. I can point to several, however, that the scent of an actual doe helped me kill.

If I do decide to use scent its Tink's 69 placed on a cotton ball in an old 35mm film case circling my stand at 15 yards with a minimum of 6 film cases. Its been years since I've used any.
For Whitetails... IMO Best Scent Is No Scent.....

I have seen it work though... like anything you have to have some faith in whatever it is "new" your introducing.... one way to build confidence is by doing.. trial and error.... gaining your own personal experiences.. I ultimately decided, via my gained personal experiences over the years; when it comes to introducing Scent to Whitetails... the benefits never seemed to outweigh the overall risk of ruining a hunt. The only commercial and/or DIY scents I tinker with are for Trapping... Have you ever sat any traps or know of anyone that does? If not... You might want to consider befriending a fur trapper in your area especially if you want to learn/witness how certain/specific scents are chosen and deployed ....

BTW... on the subject of Scent. I've personally experienced positive results with Nose Jammer... Yep! Believe It Or Don't.... :)... I was given a aerosol can of Nose Jammer as a Gag Gift a few seasons back. The very 1st time I put it to use was during Bow Season out of a Bull Blind setting on the ground. It was a really cold/frosty morning with very little wind speed. I had made it to the blind clean and sprayed the "perceived" downwind side of the blind and both sides with NJ.. I had 2 separate doe groups come in as close as 7 yds and never spook. The older doe would tilt their heads up sniffing and at times be facing my blinds general direction. None of deer ever busted or blew. I admit it was a super still morning and the low/zero wind speed may have played a roll. Overall I considered the NJ involved interaction with multiple deer that morning as a positive one.... The reason I decided to use NJ on that particular hunt was due to the forecasted lack of wind speed. I'm fairly convinced my scent was capable of covering those 7-10 yds to ruin the hunt. Both family groups exited the plot without incident.

My other Nose Jammer experience involved spraying the bottoms of my rubber boots. I had a fairly decent hike to a ridge top where a 2 man deer stand was located. I made sure to not spray the bottom of my rubber soles until after I had crossed all the creeks. I had just gotten settled when I picked up movement in the same vicinity/trail I walked in on that morning. I watched a young button buck-nose to the ground cover my every step. Bird dogging my trail to the base of my ladder. He smelled the first 3 rungs of the ladder then hung around feeding in the plot below me. I Learned a good lesson that day... I don't use Nose Jammer on my boots anymore.. I can see using it out west or open country during a spot and stalk scenario... Damnn-dest thing is that the Nose Jammer I was using smelled like sugar cookies! Way better than sardines, tuna oil, etc. Best Of Luck! Don't let anyone talk you out of an experience with Scent.. I highly recommend that you research as much info that you can get your eyes on. You can also extract urine fairly easily from deer that your or others in your camp harvest. If this is something you might be interested in shoot me a PM @WBF ....

Results????
The only thing I've ever seen work was actual buck piss.
Friend shot a buck at Ted Shanks early one season years ago.
His brother in law saved the bladder and contents.
He poured the pee in a film canister with cotton balls.
The next weekend he killed an 11 pointer that actually had his nose on the canister when the arrow passed through the boiler room.

I used the canister the next day and killed a doe that was sniffing the canister when I released.

I don't think it works with urine from a deer that lives where you hunt. It works when the deer is from a totally different area. Shanks is a good 20 miles from the area we took the 11 and doe from.
Results????
Had a doe circle my stand sniffing each film canister. Once she offered the perfect quartering away shot I stuck her with an arrow. Watched her bound away and stop 50 yards out looking around. She dropped right there after a minute or two. As I was giving her a few minutes to die a young buck came in and circled the scent canisters just as the doe did just minutes before. 15 yards out he circled my stand stopping at each scented spot and gave it a good sniff. I only had one tag so I let him walk. He found her scent and followed it to her body. "Sorry to ruin your date young fella!" Once I got down from my tree stand he left the area.
Macanudo. :D

I've stopped using scents. Anytime I've kilt a deer it's been with no scent and lax scent control. All I do now is take a shower and head out. No sprays, no scents, no nothing. I've been much more successful without.

Same results with nose jammer myself. A friend of a friend had similar results as yours so I said F it and bought some too. I wasn't seeing many deer that season anyways so I wasn't worried about messing things up if it didn't work.

I had a doe walk right down my path in one time and then had a 2 year old buck stand down wind of me for quite some another time.

I don't use it every time I hunt but I have had positive results.

I use no scent. I prefer to keep the woods as natural as possible.
I’ve heard good results a couple times just taking a leak over the side of my tree stand and then having a deer come by and sniff it. Killed a little fork horn muley in 2013 that spent several minutes sniffing my pee before wandering far enough away to give a good quartering shot. Guess they like piss that smells like beer

I don't use scents much anymore, but if I had the time I would consider opening up a scrape line past a few stands for sure!

There is no questions that estrous scents can and do work, you hear the stories every season about someone who dumped a bottle and a giant rolls in and gets smoked! Had that exact scenario play out last season for a hillbilly nearby!
