What reg changes would you like to see?

Mine are:

1. Successful youth turkey hunters during youth season could take their 2nd bird opening week. While I still have a 9 yo, I don’t have any hunting youth season anymore but find it silly the youth need to wait until the 2nd week. Recruit and retain, right??

2. No hens until things get figured out, Fall or Spring

3. No archery turkey tags just be McQueen you archery hunt, or use a crossbow during archery season.

Cut the season down to 2 weeks and 1 adult male turkey. Eliminate fall season, archery season and out of state tags. That would be a great start. But yes I agree if they stay with 2 birds the youth hunters should be able to harvest 2nd bird the first week. Unfortunately it’s not truly about getting the future hunters involved. The MDC is hooked on the mighty dollar. They waste so much money on Brass and lazy office employees. It’s sad and unfortunately the results are showing.
1 Tom
all day hunt
2 week season
I got no issues with OOS hunters

Missouri is on pace for a total harvest in the 45-47,000 range this year and you want to change the regulations?

The kill is going to be about 40000-41000. Historically pretty consistent 50% first week, 32 second, 18 3rd.
Kill was in the 52-56000 range several years in 2002 to 2008 time frame.

Beerman,

Missouri has killed 37,000 birds as of today, with a week left to hunt. It will be quite a bit higher than 40-41,000. Another 20% puts the total at 46,500
I'm only talking normal season, not children's season too.

Beerman,

Normal season will be around 44k
Honestly don’t think the problem with turkey numbers has much to do with hunting.

Loss of habitat combined with increase in the critters that eat them, be it pre or post hatch.

Hunters kill toms, a few hens but not very many. Doubtful a reg change is gonna change population levels.

This is supposed to be a hunting forum and I was just posting a topic for discussion.

And base On a county by county basis.

How are you going to enforce no hens in the spring? Bearded hens will still get killed and just checked as Gobblers. With telechec, the only thing that making a no-hen reg will do is make you sleep better I guess.
I dont disagree that hens shouldn’t be killed, just saying some people honestly dont know the difference. My guess is a certain percentage of gobblers checked today are actually hens with people not knowing the difference.
Either way it’s pretty insignificant. I agree we shouldn’t be killing hens but that’s not what’s wrong with turkey populations. It doesnt help, but its not dragging down the entire flock.
