Most of us have met or come in contact with someone(s) that aren't honest when tagging deer. If you were to guess based on your personal experience of the hunters you've met or heard about. What's your guess on how many deer are taken and never recorded?

So, the poll question is: What percent of deer are killed by a hunter and never recorded?

BTW: The current/final-ish totals for rifle season is 191,067

I voted 21-25%. I bet it's higher than most think. I think it's just getting worse all the time too. We noticed the road snoopers were extra thick this year too.

[rquote=1486324&tid=103860&author=Refuze2falo]100 % of the antlered bucks killed with a rifle in the next 12 days will not be checked in.... Well as a firearm buck anyhow:stirpot::stirpot::stirpot:[/rquote]

I agree, and for all those people who use"fast burning" blackpowder, during smoke pole season.

I would be inclined to think that most deer that don't get checked are camp meat or does. I know there are poachers who kill for the horns, but there is probably just as many people who shoot them off ther porch for the meat.

Noticed that myself; I'm betting a lot of it was attributed to the rainy weather.

I said 6-10%, but I agree with Jeremy, I think I might poop my pants if I knew the real numbers.

Personally, I don't know anyone that has shot a deer and not checked it in, and I would like to think that most, if not all, of the hunters I know are legit. However, most of the people I know are very aware of my stance on poachers and unethical hunters, so they would likely know it is in their best interest to not tell me such stories.

I had a conversation with a conservation officer, way back, probably in the early '90's, just about this subject. Back then, he said the MDC estimates that 50% of the deer that are shot each year, do not get turned in. Most of those, he said, were shot at night.

I believe it's a relatively low #. I know, it's one of my character flaws, but I like to see the positive in most people rather than think every one is suspect & dishonest.

I'm truly starting to wonder about some of our MWT members though. I've known some thieves in my day & nearly everyone of them were super paranoid about keeping all their stuff under lock & key at all times. With all the questioning of fellow hunters ethics in the past few weeks, I'm thinkin we may have some closet non ethical people hanging out amongst us. This is based on my analogy of the thieves in case ya missed it.

[rquote=1486500&tid=103860&author=Rebel]A couple years ago I shot a turkey, got busy and didnt call it in.

I called a week later freaking out to the mdc apologizing..etc..etc..

I dunno how people can do it, when I realized I had basically done it, i was sick to my stomach.

[/rquote]

So, does that mean we can classify you as a poacher?:thinking:

There is no way on Gods green earth to actually know the anwer to your poll, but my bet is that it's pretty low. I said 1-5%....I don't know of anyone that hasn't checked one in.

Maybe low in or on your farm .....Southern county are high .....northern are too

Lots of city boys own land they dont live on ...locals know it and take advantage

i picked 26 30 .....but most likely higher ..........when i did deer hunt ,i hunted with an mdc employee ....and he said they knew it was 40 to 50 % ....which they figured in at the time of how many doe tags were allowed

I agree with ya'...on BOTH accounts.

But on the same note, I DO keep a lot of my stuff under lock & key. But it's mostly cause I've been ripped off before.

I can definitely see where thieves are quite paranoid, though...wouldn't you be be, if you had "inside" information on how much thieving actually goes on?!

Thieves hang out with like-minded people, and their code of "honor amongst thieves", is nothin' more than a myth. Thieves wouldn't turn other thieves in, for stealing from another thief...it would be quite comical, for a thief to call the authorities, to report that his stolen property had been stolen from him, eh?!

But then again, they aren't the sharpest pencil in the box, to begin with...

Wow! To all the guys who said they think its low, and they dont know anyone who would do that,, you should come to Dent county.. That behavior is normal around here,, its sickening the amount of blatant violators in the area, and I would say at least 25% and maybe as high as 50% never get tagged around here.....
