OK, I have heard it both ways. According to the law, who gets the deer? First Blood, (the first person to shoot the animal that causes a fatal wound) or Last Blood, (the person who delivers the last fatal wound that bring the animal down for good). I have heard people argue about it many times and even witnessed a big scene this year while bow hunting on Conservation land. Who legally gets the deer?

So how do you go about enforcing this... like on public ground??
My cousin had to yeild to a couple of thugs one year on a really nice buck that HE put on the ground. My uncle was with him and decided it wasnt worth a fistfight.

Possessions 9/10ths of the law. Not many deer are going to be worth a fistfight or a gun fight, or even a legal battle.

Here's my personal position on the subject. I doubt there's a deer alive that's worth me wanting to claim it if I feel someone else put the lethal shot into it. Trail it onto my property & tell me ya shot it & I'm gonna head to the house & get the mule & help ya get him out.

[rquote=1520864&tid=106022&author=hun10]How do you know the first shot wasn't going to yield a dead animal?[/rquote]
Thats what I was wondering.
The buck in the case I mentioned was gutshot and it was very evident. My cuz anchored him with a 300winmag to the shoulder which also kilt the deer in short order.
They were fixing to take care of it when another two hunters claimed they had shot it first (btw, there was no way to prove that one of them actually took the first shot).
An argument ensued and it was going to get violent so my unc and cuz relented and walked away.

Sad thing is, my cousin was like 14 at the time.

Takes a pretty heartless person to do that to a 14yr old...

This is an ethics question. There is no clear cut answer. Look at the deer as if it didn't have a rack and make the decision. Rat's cousin's uncle was right, it's not worth a fist fight. I would like to think that there are not people out there who would take a deer from a 14 yr old...but there are. Hats off to the uncle who set the right example for the 14 yr old cousin and took the high road.

Thanks for those words and thats exactly how we feel about it.
They used to be landowners in Adair county but reside in Warren county now and dont get to hunt as much anymore and its all public ground now.
That story still gets told every thanksgiving seems like. :)
