So last fall I broadcast some ww and cc into standing beans. The ww grew to 4 or 5 inches before frost. This spring it was supposed to be terminated shortly after turk season but it never happened. By the beginning of July this is what it looked like.

During the first week of July the farmer had it sprayed. He came back a week later and drilled beans into it. This is what it looks like now.

The "edges" never have grown much in the 3 years he's been farming this place. He's never done a soil test that I know of. Nor has he ever spread any fertilizer that I know of. This is what they look like.

He claims he's not going to do anymore with this field this year. When I talked to him he said he was going to send the guys out to spray again. I told him not to bother with that as there weren't enough beans to pay for the cost of the spray. How much do deer utilize ww that has this much growth already and has another 4-8 weeks of growing to do? Its coming on pretty strong. There is a small amount of clover mixed in with this that hasn't really done much growing. The rest is weeds. What would you do given the time of year? I want to keep the ww if it will appeal to the deer. The turks sure are loving it. There is plenty of moisture out there currently as well. I have a bag of ww on hand I figure on broadcasting just because I dont see any need of it sitting in my garage all winter.

A bag of wheat won't break the bank. If he doesn't combine that should draw deer. I can't expand the pictures to see it very well. But if he isn't combining it I would spread wheat I'm the thinnest spots. 02

Hmmm I made the pics smaller thinking it would be easier to not have to view such a big file. There’s nothing for him to combine right now. And I mean basically no plants to even grow. Just wasn’t sure how much of a draw more mature ww would be to the deer

If you throw wheat in now or in a couple of weeks that wheat would be just dandy through the entire season. I dont put mine out till late Sept

You are going to be around the first of September. I don't think that should be too far out of line.
I should have been more clear. I was referring to the wheat that reseeded itself back in early July. That’s what I was wondering about. If I throw some out now I know they’ll use that if it grows. I was wondering about the 2 month old stuff that is already a couple ft tall. How much will they utilize that? Sorry for the confusion
It should head. That will be food above snow cover for a lot of critters including deer. 02
Awesome. Never thought about the above snow line. Good info thanks
You might want to consider some small seeds like clover and Radishes/Brassicas in the bare spots . Crimson clover handles the colder weather fairly well. See how that fills in ... plenty of time to over seed with a winter cereal like Rye or Wheat after you see how your clover and brassicas do. Plenty of food there....

I hope I am right about it heading. Spring wheat does.

Even if it doesn't that is sure food for thought for next year. No idea why I didn't think of that before
I think winter wheat has to freeze to produce seed . Stratification? Osage orange have to go through that process to.
