Any owners of this gun or experience with 300 Win Mag ? Looking to purchase a new rifle for...Who am I kidding I don't have a reason just want this caliber. HA! I know Weatherby has carried a good name of flat shooting rifles just curious if anyone has this particular model since I believe they just started this model in 2019.

Thanks

The Vanguard has been around for a long time. It’s a Howa made in Japan. Good guns for the price. You don’t mean a 300 Weatherby Mag, do you? Lotta gun with a lot of kick. 7mm Rem Mag will do 95% of what a 300 will do, with a flatter trajectory and less recoil. For deer they are both massive overkill. Do you elk hunt?

I've had four Howa 1500s, same rifle, different cap covering the firing pin. All were good, but a bit fussy about the loads they'd shoot REAL well. They are a little heavy compared to a Remington 700, for example, but good solid rifles. I like the actions much better than the Remington actions, though the triggers aren't quite as good. I don't know anything at all about that model variant, but there's not much unknown about the Howa/Weatherby.

The Vanguards are great shooters....

300 Mag anything is overkill for ******, but that shouldn't stop you from wanting one. :D

If you want a .300winmag I would suggest getting a heavier rifle. My gf used to shoot my .300 winmag all the time with 165 grain loads. It was an X-Bolt Eclipse with the thumbhole stock it kicked about like a 30-06 because of the weight.I didn’t have a muzzle brake or anything like that.I sold mine though as the gun itself “weight wise” was just too much to be toting into the woods on long walks.Im switching to 28 Nosler for my reach out and touch then caliber. If all your shots on deer are 300 yards an in I would suggest .308 , .270 , 7mm-08 , or .280. I have 2 of the four and use them just about on every hunt unless I’m hunting edge of a crop field or bigger area were shots could be 500 yards or so plus I plan on going out west also.If you have to have one though get a rifle in the 8lb range with a great optic with a dial system for yardage and shoot bullets in the 165 grain range and you’ll be good.If you shoot handloads prepare for more recoil. The 210 grain Berger’s my buddies dad loaded for me would not let deer take a step after being shot and we’re crazy accurate but the recoil was that of a 3-1/2” 12 gauge with buckshot

Yeah I don't elk hunt but that doesn't mean I won't eventually. LOL! I know it may be overkill but I really wanted a gun with some solid knocking power out to 400yds. Everything I've read the .300 Win Mag really performs well out to 500yds. I've never owned a Mag caliber and just thought this would be a good start. I've always been a .270 or 30/06 shooter.

They don't shoot flat. At least not comparatively inside 500yds. Study some ballistics tables and compare it to something like a 264 Win Mag or a 257 Weatherby or a 7mm Rem Mag. They really are a LOT of gun that aren't pleasurable to shoot for most people in a sporter weight rifle like @antlercrazed was saying. If you aren't gonna shoot the 180gr or larger bullets, there's no point in having one, when you could shoot the same weight bullet with a MUCH better trajectory in a smaller caliber. Speed and "flat shooting" is all relative, and the larger the caliber, the less they compare to smaller calibers, in an straight comparison. Even a 25-06 or a 280AI would do everything you want it too, not to mention the good ole 270!

If you do however get a sporter weight rifle make sure you get a good muzzle brake and good hearing protection.I don’t care what anyone tells you,you will not be consistent shooting especially long range shooting if your felt recoil is high.My new long range hunting rifle I ordered the other day comes with a muzzle brake but I’m installing an aftermarket self timing brake that reduces recoil even more.

Well I just don't wanna see you get beat up too bad and start flinching like a sissy. I think they make a 22 Nosler also, and I bet you could get a muzzle break for it too....

Come shoot these handloads in a 6.5lb rifle with no brake and then with one and you be surprised the difference it makes lol.I don't mind a muzzle brake I wear hearing protection because I about blew my eardrums out in a boxstand already before lol

270/30-06 will kill those deer out to 400yds no problemo.

Now if you just want a 300 Win mag, I totally get that... Very versatile, and will do just a little bit more than your 30-06. :D But, if you want to burn more powder, it's a perfect whitetail round... :D

If I was going to buy one though, I'd be buyin in a pretty stout rifle though. Unless you don't really plan to do anything more with it than sight it in, and then go kill stuff. But, if you plan to do a lot of shooting at the range, etc.... It's going to thump a bit in a light rifle. But, some people like that. :D

I hunted this past weekend, using a Weatherby Vanguard Badlands 300WinMag. Loved it. Will be buying one as soon as I find a reasonable price. Took 4 deer, ranging from. 100 - 250 yds. If you get one, I wouldn't be stingy on the scope. I have confidence in reaching out to 300-400 yds with this rifle.

Agree with getting a good self timing brake. Mine is loud but you could shoot it all day long.

I picked up a .stainless Rem 700 .300 two deer seasons ago, stuck a Vortex Razor LHT 3-15x42 on it, and haven't touched my .270 since then. I've killed five or six deer with it now using the 150gr Deer Season XP ammo and I can't tell that it messes up more meat than my .270 ever did. If you like to save the shoulders, don't hit em in the shoulders.

I'm stocked up on 180gr rounds now though so I'll be using those going forward. My intentions were to buy it for elk, but it's such a good shooter that I've been using on deer as well. I'm not sure what my .300 weighs, but the recoil doesn't seem all that bad to me. Maybe it'll get worse when I start shooting the 180gr rounds through it. I'll find out this year.

People don't seem to understand that a 150 grain powerpoint bullet out of a 300wm is the exact same bullet as a 150 grain powerpoint bullet out of a 308 or other "deer" caliber.
No extra exploding tip.
