I tried them for the first time last year and was very happy. I disced, broadcasted and dragged. Did AWP, winter wheat, and winter rye. Based on some reviews on here I just ordered the frost master peas this year. Late August/early Sept should work well
Peas are an ice-cream plot... 1 stand alone acre of Peas most likely will be decimated... that's one of the several reasons why I don't like planting stand alone plots with only 1 variety of seed. I like Peas in a mix with some type of cereal grain. Peas like to vine.. so cereal grains such as Winter Wheat or Rye, Oats makes a nice companion crop... I don't want cereals planted till late August first couple weeks of October. Thus I'll drill my Cereals and AWP's at the same time...
Agree I plan on planting the peas in with winter wheat and oats

I’ve planted a blend of Austrian winter peas, cereal rye and bin run wheat for several years now. I’ve had good luck with it but I’m not so sure you could plant cheap bin run wheat at the right time and have good luck. The right time is key. You plant wheat to early and it gets big and tall and tough and they deer won’t utilize it until the winter gets rough and they will mow it down. Plant it 4 or 5 weeks before rifle season and they love it.

I've had excellent utilization of winter peas. Get the frost master variety if you can, they are far more tolerant to cold/freezing. I usually wind up terminating some when I plant my summer plots.
Highly preferred crop, yes, but it depends on other food sources. If planting in an area with surrounding ag crops, the pressure is lessened. If planted in an area where it will be the focus of the herd, it could easily be decimated. Dont plant as a pure stand, just in case they are wiped out. I add CC, a light dose of PTT, and Radish.

I plant peas at the same time as brassicas, crimson clover. Late July, early August. It gives more time to establish and develop more tonnage than waiting later and risking a early cold spell. There is a risk of drought damage early, but I've historically had more issues with cold shutting down growth on later planted crop. Plant cereals over the top heavy in september. All it takes is a wet spell or heavy dew to sprout it. Wont be as good as drilled, obviously, but you definitely have a plot to work with...
