My wife and I wanted to try and put in a small vineyard on a portion of the new farm. Fingers crossed, should be a fun project with the family nonetheless!

Wife is trying her hand at a few vines herself all be it much smaller. So far it has been a slow go of it. I'll be curious to see how you plan to support the weight of the vines as from what we could tell can get mighty heavy over time.

Ya all have a nice place..some wide open country

Thank you! Good luck to you all too, its a fun project... for the end posts we are going to be using 5" x 8' treated round posts. I ll plan to set them at a 60 degree angle. I ll also be planning to earth anchor guy wires. The trellis will be 12.5 guage high tensile wire, hopefully it works but this is going to be a learning experience for sure.

Good luck! Are you running irrigation to the vineyard as well?

Thank you! Unfortunately not at this time, that is going to be a big hurdle this year. I need to figure out that problem. I don't have water hook up at the farm but i do have a pond.. This first year it may just be an intensive effort to manually make sure the plants get watered once a week during summer months so that the roots get well established. Open for suggestions for sure

We started an orchard at our place and this year I'm building an 8x10 roof to catch rain water and divert that into a 250 gallon rain barrel for on site water. We'll store some things under the roof but mostly it's for rain catchment. Next step would be to incorporate some sort of solar/battery timer watering system if drought becomes a real issue

we are using the earth anchors set in concrete, not sure what the gauge of wire is but it's 3/16th coated..it was a kit from Amazon

That sounds like a great idea!

Once your vines get established, how are you going to keep the raccoons out of your grapes? My cousin put some vines in, right next to the house, and the vermin still got them. Gramps had an arbor around the fence into his garden, and yep, the raccoons still got 'em.
They will be a real problem, I suspect.

Most of the vineyards around here net them to protect. They also use air cannons to run them off.

Yes when the time comes, we are planning to net them. That should help with the birds, deer, and racoons but i suspect it will be a war with all the different animals trying to get their fill ha ha.. We are starting the plants out in a grow tube to help protect against rabbits/deer and allow for herbicide the first year.. Its going to be a fight though ha ha

Some sunday work progress. So glad we found a gas powered T-post pounder. The old man and me were getting worn out from putting them in manually lol.. Nearly done with the line posts. Weather permitting, next weekend finish line posts and put in end posts.

Was able to work on the Vineyard last sunday 3-27, and we are making progress. Line posts are all in and starting on the end posts now. Plants will arrive in 3 weeks, vineyard construction on schedule.

Thank you very much!
Two questions, #1 How many years till full production of vines?
#2 Do you need to install protection from deer brows?
