Very preliminary load test

Tuesday, the two rifles arrived and yesterday I set about forming some 9 X 57 brass for the Haenel. Pretty straightforward, size -06 brass in 9 X 57 die, cut off excess, trim to length. I've had good results with the RCBS, gas checked, 358 bullet cast at 205 gr. from my mold and alloy plus, I had some cast already. The groove dia. slugged at .353 and I have a .355 sizing die so that's what they got. Into the case went 12 grs. of Unique and foam filler then set the bullet. The below results are only at 25 yards and offhand....it's just too hot to drag out a bunch of shooting gear for 5 rounds. I fired the first one from the hip as sort of a test round then put the remaining 5 on target. I believe the old rifle and new load have potential!

Not many pics but it's a start. Gotta order the Brenneke dies then I think I'm headed for the couch.

Good looking rifle and good start! :D Iron sights are a thing of the past for me. :(
I have to cheat....sorta. File the rear notch to get some daylight around the front sight and good ol' blue painters tape...

Good idea.
So, I think you all saw that I had a youthful memory and bought that lever from xx75. It's in awesome shape and thanks to Billy and especially @Gamegetter for the patient pony. @xx75 is a great guy to do business with and he is an astute custodian of his stuff.
So, I take possession after the pony and was excited to get home and shoulder it. Turns out,my eyes are no longer able to see iron sights. Lol
So, I paint the front post with white gloss nail polish and touch up the rear withthe same and I'm good to go.
I'm not a lot different than a lot of you all who had their first experience with a 94,but I have wanted one of my own for a long time.

Sorry for the steal on your thread Sharps. Something tells me you won't be peeved about it.
Nahhh, always good to hear others experience. If you wear glasses, try the home made diopter. They really work good for sharpening sights for old(er) eyes, or even those who aren't old and suffer from the same malady.

Always look forward to your write ups.
Thank you fish.. Yesterday afternoon I loaded up 5 more with 13 grs. of Unique. This morning while it is still cool I set the target at 50 yards and got out my rests. I didn't take a picture of the group but the last 3 were under an inch with the 1st shot out of the group maybe 1/2 inch. The fifth I shot at my 100 yard buffalo target, offhand. I hit it but I have no idea where and the target is about 2 ft. long by 16-18 inches tall so it was no great shakes as a shot. Sure was fun though!!! Right now the stock is hanging on a hook with stripper applied to the varnish. That stuff was awful. A proper oil finish will be applied. Got the dies ordered for the Brenneke and I remembered I have a few hundred 7mm, 150 and 160 gr. bullets left over from when I had a 7 X 57R in a drilling. Just need the dies to arrive.

I need to try this. I want to keep hunting with the Hawken (cheap replica) as long as possible, but I refuse to put an optical on it. So far I'm still good, but want to try this to see what effect it can have.
421, you'll probably need to experiment with the hole diameter a bit. For me, between 1/8 and 3 /16 works good. I use a leather punch and punch through the entire roll of blue painters tape then just cut out a squre. Where that piece of tape is on my glasses works well for me with rifles. Handguns see it more centered on the lens. Other tapes can be used, I just found that the painters tape left the least residue and was easiest to remove. It should work admirably for you.
Son-of-a-gun!! I peeled off about 1/8 inch of varnish from the Haenel and after it dried from the stripper and I got one coat of linseed oil on it, it has a pretty fair piece of lumber on it! Makes me wonder what's under all that varnish on the Brenneke. Might have quite a surprise!
