I got an invite to do a little duck hunting Saturday morning, and since I have never been before, I thought I would give it a try. A friend of mine at work drug me out dark and early on the coldest morning we have had this fall, and it was a blast. We didn't get a whole lot of action, but seen a handful of birds (maybe a hundred or so, not including the 60 canada's we saw). This mallard hen was the only thing to come into shotgun range, well I should say the only thing worth shooting that came into range. We could of had a good number of coots, but decided to pass on those dirt birds. My buddy that took me out was kind enough to let me have first crack at her, and I ended up bringing home my first duck. Now I just need to pop a few more to actually have a meal.

It was a lot different than deer hunting. I don't think I have ever made that much noise while hunting in my life. The walk to the pool we were hunting over was nearly deafening from the rattling decoys, then we had to bust up a huge chunk of ice since there wasn't any open water. But it was still a good time.

Don't expect me to miss any time in the treestand to go duckin' when I have deer tags to fill, but it will definitely be a fun way to kill the time between deer season and shed season.

I couldn't believe how fast the time went by. It's nice to have people to chat with while the skies are empty. I'm looking forward to a hunt where there are several opportunities to shoot at something.

LOL, I just noticed I had my turkey choke back on the gun in the pic. I don't own a modified choke, so I was using an extra that the guy I was hunting with had. I will say I can see a few new hunting purchases in my future now. :D

...just when my wife thought I owned everything I needed for hunting :hysterical:

Oh man. If you get into waterfowl huntin she has no idea. Better buy her a new car before you do.:claphands: Decoys, blinds, layout boats, more decoys, Winchester Super X3, shotgun shells, and on and on and on. Make a trip up to Fountain Grove or try to get out in the MO river bottoms. Great places to go. Goosin is just as fun too. Get out this winter for some snow geese late in Feb, March, and April. No limit and no limit on how many shells in the tube, you get to take the plug out.:claphands::claphands:....electric callers and thousands of birds. I've heard of guys droppin 50 or more birds in one pass. If that aint fun I don't know what fun is. The down time in between is what really makes it fun. Good fun with good people, can't beat it.:pop::cheers::claphands:

I was reading about light goose hunting and how insane it can be. I have seen hundreds of snows in some of the ag fields on my way to some of my shed hunting spots in late January and February, but I have only seen them on private land and not public land, so I may break down and knock on some doors and see if I can get access to some good snow goose spots. Heck, I might have to talk to the guy I was duck hunting with on Saturday, maybe he already has some hook ups for some light goose hunting spots. I couldn't imagine seeing multiple 7+ pound birds falling out of the sky!

Hey, I might stubble across a shed while snow goose hunting someone else's property. Come on now, just because I whacked a bird doesn't mean I am going to neglect my antler obsession!!!!!

:cool3:

Didn't you go duck hunting this weekend too :scared: Who are you calling :lame: :quackquack:
