I got an invite to do a little duck hunting Saturday morning, and since I have never been before, I thought I would give it a try. A friend of mine at work drug me out dark and early on the coldest morning we have had this fall, and it was a blast. We didn't get a whole lot of action, but seen a handful of birds (maybe a hundred or so, not including the 60 canada's we saw). This mallard hen was the only thing to come into shotgun range, well I should say the only thing worth shooting that came into range. We could of had a good number of coots, but decided to pass on those dirt birds. My buddy that took me out was kind enough to let me have first crack at her, and I ended up bringing home my first duck. Now I just need to pop a few more to actually have a meal.
It was a lot different than deer hunting. I don't think I have ever made that much noise while hunting in my life. The walk to the pool we were hunting over was nearly deafening from the rattling decoys, then we had to bust up a huge chunk of ice since there wasn't any open water. But it was still a good time.
Don't expect me to miss any time in the treestand to go duckin' when I have deer tags to fill, but it will definitely be a fun way to kill the time between deer season and shed season.
