Tip of the day, cheap wind direction detector

While you guys are out planting stuff, or putting stuff out in front of your camera. Save those strings that you are removing from your bags of seed and or corn. Later when you hang your stands, take a string, fray one end and tie other end down in front of stand, and one up by where you are in the stand, that way at a glance you can see the wind direction. You may want to shorten it and put it where it will not get caught up in other limbs.

Back in the day the thing was to tie a feather onto a string, well if the feather gets wet, it gets real heavy and will not move in a breeze, tornado, yes, breeze, not so much.

I need to do this to my trail camera locations. I've often wondered what the wind direction was when certain photos were took. Might help me develop a pattern. It also might help me determine if and where they bed differently due to wind direction.

Weather Underground is a lot easier..

Weather underground will show previous wind directions?

I use the AP Windy for current and future wind directions and where wind shifts are
I don't trust any app to tell me the wind direction because terrain affect it greatly. I like the string idea and have tried multiple different things. I really like milk weed seed silks but that requires doing your own harvest.

I have been known to bail out of a stand when the wind has shifted.

I don't believe that I ever said anything that you have stated but however you want to interpret what is posted. If you want to trust a app to tell you what is happening in front of you go ahead. I guess I'm not as lucky as you to open any app that gives wind direction and have it be correct 100%.

If the winds do shift and I believe the spot is burnt with the wind direction, I will move stands. But anyone hunter worth his salts would do that or so I am told.

Lol, yes, I do. I know, I know it's just a deer...

I carry the seed out of a milk weed pod. I like to drop the little fluffy seeds from my stand. You'd be surprised what you'd see, a lot more than wind direction. You can see how wind moves through the hills/valleys. Sometimes you can watch it ride a thermal straight up, been pretty educational.

Sometimes, depends on if I have another stand near by, I have been known to bail and just sit on a hill to do some scouting. I have one that they bed to the southwest of me. Evening, a north wind is iffy, if it shifts just a little to the east I am ought of there, period.

The string helps while I am in a canyon and the wind comes over the top and then rolls over or swirls a certain direction, but yet I do not feel even a breeze. Then when you see that monster buck coming down the trail , you can look at the string and hope you get a shot before he hits your scent stream. Little 8 below, I bailed when I seen him walking into the bedding area one morning, hoping he would not smell me and keep on going. I did not hunt that spot for 3 days due to a NE wind...wind changed on the 4th day....oh, he was hanging with a doe

Make the pollinator crowd happy and use Milkweed seed from the pods
My milkweed harvest will come in handy. I mowed around some plants that had pods so I can go back and pick em.

.
Try WINDY ,see above, you can see windshifts within a mile or so of your location. Can see fronts. Low pressure areas n how fast they are moving

I listen to the weather and it says wind is to blow out of such and such direction. Well I can’t hunt these Deer.

Get up next morning, pull my lighter out, check wind find I can hunt where I wanted.

I use a piece of thread.

Another thing I found if there is light rain and some breeze it is best to still hunt towards the wind. Lots of times you will catch Deer feeding that would never come by your stand.

oneshot

You are correct @Dafish .... I went on Weather Underground today and wasn't able to find the historical data.
NOAA looks to be the only remaining resource. IIRC just about every weather resource gets their data from NOAA. I'll give your Windy AP a looking over! Weather Underground is still a good resource whereas you can personalize all your data points. Wind Direction/Speed, Barometer, Cloud Cover, Precipitation, etc ...
