Many people probably do not realize how many different boxes have been created over the years. Most people utilize a Cost style box. I've always been different and always wanted to think outside the box. When it comes to turkey hunting, I love tradition and several years ago I asked a very well known callmaker to build me an all Osage Turpin call. He pretty much said "no" it cannot be done. Fast forward to this last week and to my surprise, not only did I have one... but I had twin all Osage Turpin calls.
Turpin calls have a very unique sound and play a lot different than almost any other box call out there. They are straight walled calls with no spring assistance. There are only a handful of callmakers that are still building them and most of them are in their late 60's. Needless to say, I picture the demise of Turpins in the very near future. They are harder to build, harder to tune and a lot harder to master than the Cost style boxes... but almost everyone that knows how to utilize them will say they are 10x deadlier than any of the other boxes. You cannot mistake the sound of a Turpin. It is different.
I take pride in all of my collection, but these two mean so much. I'm an Osage nut and Osage is not a great wood choice on boxes. This wood was cut by the callmaker and he let the log dry and then used it. Of course many blades were dulled, chisels were broke, and a few bad words were muttered... but two masterpieces were built. He has me an Osage box with bloodwood hen box completed and it will probably be one of many of my go to Spring call this year!!!
Here are my two precious twins!!!
