Swisher Pull-Behind Rough Cut 44 in. 11.5-HP Briggs and Stratton

Anyone have one and your thoughts on it?

Literature says it'll cut 3" material - is that your experience?

Today I went to a patch of crp we have and it has a lot of dogwoods growing I'd like to mow, but the tractor is 200 miles away, so I'm thinking maybe an ATV and a Rough Cut would do the job and then some if what they advertise is true...

Any input would be appreciated.

Had one they cut good but small saplings it will shake and burn up belts. You may be able to cut 3” but they would have to be few and far between

I have one that is running 10+ years old and I've owned it for a year. It's the 44" with the 10.5 motor. Works like a charm on anything from grass to saplings up to 2" for me. The issue with anything bigger than 1" us that it can almost ride completely underneath the mower and not bounce up enough to get cut. The height it important when it gets past 1.5". It has cut saplings over 2" but it rarely gets done. I'll run through and cut anything bigger than 2" down before I run my 44" over it. If I was gonna run over 3" saplings, I'd buy the 14.5 hp motor model.

Thanks guys, makes sense on the height issue and them bowing over. I don't think any are 2" but there may be a few that are clumped together. Sounds like this might be an option for me. They are growing in spots, nothing super thick, yet, so I'd like to get after them.
They do ok but crp might not be friendly to it

I think you'll have no problem at all with it. I love my swisher and its has mowed probably 5 acres worth of crap for me this year multiple times.
I had one, but pretty sure mine had a 12.5 HP Briggs on it. Mowed everything I needed it to. Sold it when I got the tractor and a three point shredder. Still wish I had it...
My concern was that they'd be flimsy and wouldn't last, but sounds like they might be pretty handy, especially when you didn't want to, or it wasn't convenient to, load up a tractor and shredder.

I inherited a used Swisher RTB14544 that has a 14.5 I/C OHV Briggs & Statton. Electric start with remote lever for blade engagement. I only used it for a bit. Tried to mow three foot tall fescure...just bound up underneath and left most in a pinwheel design behind me. Its not made for cutting grass. It has a sling blade underneath like a regular brush hog. The blade will sling back if it hits something fairly big...like a 3 inch sapling but the second (has two or three) will give it another whack and will get the job done. Basically its a mini brush hog. Right after I have it that original test my ATV quit running. Gas intake issues. I'm dropping it off at a shop in the morning for them to fix it. Looking forward to mowing (mini-brush hogging) my paths around my property. Might even get my part of the dozer clearing mowed down and then harrowed up for some clover or winter wheat this fall.

I have a pic of it from their web site (see above) and a few I took before I unloaded it off the trailer at my place.

i have Ben's old one and i agree. it is good for cutting trails and shorter grass. but, if you get it on a 3" sampling it just rides up on it and throws itself around. mine bogs down in very thick or tall grass, but that just could be due to a lack of power from years of abuse. it's handier than heck for keeping the edges of my logging roads cut back so they don't get overgrown though.
