Surface Rust

1344 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Chainsaw
I just received my grandfathers 410 shotgun. But it has some light surface rust on the barrel. I was wondering what is the best method to remove the rust without damaging the bluing on the barrel. Thank You for any help you can give.

If you have some linseed oil laying around use that if not pick up some Kroil
If you can find and ole school barbers brush used to lather up shaving cream.

Instead of “brushing” with the ends/tips of the brush...
Turn it sideways and run the hairs of the brush across the rust area. You can use linseed oil like Wiser suggested I normally just use Rem Oil then go over it with the brush..
0000 Steel wool with gun oil. 0000 will not remove the factory bluing but will remove any cold bluing that may be on the gun. After the steel wool use a soft cloth with Flitz to bring the shine back to the gun.

Bill Bill Bill......havent we had the Big45 pad talk yet? I know we talked about steel wool. A fellar cant buy good ole' "merican made steel wool anymore. All thats out there is junky foreign stuff that de-grades and leave tiny hunks of RUST MAKING gremlins everywhere! Especially if ya get your jewelers loop out and really look closely! Go get urself a BIG45 pad and rub to ur hearts content with some type of oil as a lubricant while ya rub!

And if ya just GOTTA have something that resembles steel wool, go get urself some white colored scotchbrite at the hobby store, or even got ur local Westlakes and grab some "synthetic steel wool" yep! They make it...looks suspiciously like ScotchBrite...but at least it doesnt leave little steel bits all over ur metal and wood that'll make rust down the road!

I figured my post would make you respond to this thread. And an FYI...I'm still using 0000 steel wool that I bought over 25 years ago so hopefully it is the good stuff and not what we find at the Big Box Stores today.

Why use steel wool when there are better synthetic products out there? No matter what the grit is, you're still removing surface.

I work in a gun shop. We use stainless steel steel wool,On 90% of the guns light rust or pitting will wipe away. Use some oil and lightly scrub it will remove the rust without removing the blu
