Suggestions for semi auto 12 gauge

2058 Views 21 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  tcwild
Thinking about getting a new 12 gauge, would prefer wood stock, not concerned if it shoots 3 1/2” shells.
Probably looking in the used market, just wanting some suggestions. Mostly be used for quail, dove, and occasional trap shoot.
Thanks for any advice

I'm a Benelli guy, but that being said, buy what you shoulder best and feels right. I bought my first Benelli because it fit me like no other shotgun I'd ever pointed.
I would like to stay under 750.00

Benelli M2 American Beretta A300 or SX3 or 4.
I’m fond of the Browning Silver Hunters and the Benelli Montefeltros.Im sure they have some on Gun Broker. Those are nice shooting semis that would be really nice for what you are looking for

Both brands already mentioned are very nice guns. I personally have a Browning gold, they don't make them anymore but there's many used ones in your price range. Very reliable shooter and easy to swing. Whatever you get, always use good quality ammo in a semi to ensure smooth cycling of spent shells. Too many times I've heard of guys shooting the cheapest shells they can buy and blame the cycling problems on the gun and hate semi's because of that.
Hard to beat a long recoil browning a5 or franchise 48

I buy the cheapest shells I can find. When I was shooting competitively it was buy the flat. Never got out of the practice and every semi I've had shot them all.
Wow I like that and a great price as well. If I didn't already have a Montefeltro with walnut furniture I'd be all over that.

Browning or beretta would be my top picks.
Me personally... my top5 to look at would be.

1. Browning
2. Beretta
3. Benelli
4. Winchester
5. Franchi

Any of these 5 are great guns, go with what you like best, fits best, and is within your budget and you should be happy. Plenty on the used market too. Really the reason I have them ranked this way is just my personal preference, quality wise they are all top notch. Best of luck.
I’ll throw the Weatherby SA-08 in the mix. For me, it shouldered best than any other gun I looked at and it can be had, new, under your budget.

Browning Gold and Winchester SX3 are essentially the same gun. I have shot several with very light reloads (7/8oz, 1200fps) and they cycle flawlessly if clean.
They are easy to disassemble for cleaning too.

I'll second the SX3. I have only had one incident and that was with a 3.5" shell snow goosing.
I "thought" I would like "X" until I picked one up, ended up really liking the Browning Gold Hunter for what i use it for. Used they're sub 700 bucks or so. Still really like it. Keep it clean, it will perform well for you.

Browning A5 is truly "Old School". First mass produced auto loading shotgun.

But truly "Old School" shotgun would be a flinch lock front stuffer.
