Well as some of you may know I took my first song dog today. I need some advice on tanning the hide. Best way, all that. How much for a Taxi to do this if I already skinned her?

Thanks in advance.

I can't speak for all, but the taxis I deal with send that stuff to a tannery for ya. Most hides I've seen run anywhere from $100 to $150. That's with you skinning it like you mentioned.

Thanks Brad, not going to spend that on the darn thing for sure. Would like to keep something off her though. I wish I could of shot the big one I saw first, right after the fox went through. The one I got is a young female, would like to just tan the thing as best I can.

Only way I know to skin them is to "sock" it like a ****.

If anything just keep the tail. :D

Yeah and since we started seeing more signs of them up at the farm the quail and turkeys have left the area as well. I may bypass bowhunting tomorrow in the a.m. and take the 17 and kill song dogs.

Do you all think a 17hmr will kill a yote?

It will with a good shot placement and maybe using a 20 grain bullet instead of a 17 grain one. Might have to get them in closer too.

Matt, one thing you might do is going to BP and seeing if they have one of those home tanning kits and giving it a go for yourself.

Right on that is what I was thinking. I don't have the 20 grainers, just the 17 and I haven't been able to find any of the 20's either. Midway USA is out of stock on them. Guess it will be the 223 then.

Going to skin yote inside Columbia city limits!! Bet the neighbors will be happy!!!!!

[rquote=1506955&tid=105099&author=trappermark]Just checked USA fox $16.00 to flesh and $22.00 to tan. Just send them the hide frozen[/rquote]

Thanks a bunch. I will be checking into that for sure. Just hope I don't mess up the skinning job to bad. I have a brand new scalpel so hopefully it goes smoothly.
