How are the rifle season dates set/figured by the MDC? Trying to get a bead on when the 2020 dates may be. I'm guessing it will start on the 14th?

It will start 2 Saturdays before thanksgiving
Used to say that it started the Saturday nearest Nov 15 and last for 11 days, unless such an opening date would extend it thru Thanksgiving, in which case it opens one week earlier. Don’t know if that’s still how they decide. But never have understood why they wouldn’t want season to be on Thanksgiving.

Lack of participation/not reaching harvest goals is my guess.

In Arkansas that's the most crowded weekend in the deer camps. Everyone is usually off work for Thur and Friday already. Lotta guys take Mon-Wed off and hunt for 9 days. Also a great weekend to pick up a married woman at the bar.

Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November.

Firearm season starts 12 days before Thanksgiving, which is the 2 Saturdays as Henry said.

That was the way they did it for years. Saturday closest to the 15th. providing it didn't fall in Thanksgiving week.
Originally they didn't want 2 extra days of people being off to hunt.
That was when they were still building herd numbers
Now I think it doesn't much matter, between the insurance companies and the farmers it's kill as many deer as possible.
I hunted a place for a long time ( almost 20 years) and the farmer that owned the land told me one time;" I don't care how many you kill, or when you kill them! I don't care if I never see another deer on my land! I'm tired of feeding them! Kill them all!"

Its a well established fact that what happens in Arkansas doesnt matter. :D

You mean they don't go hunting with their cousins?
