This morning I was up early, and went outside to start skinning yesterdays deer before the day warmed up. At about 7:05 am, I heard a shot very,,very close to the house, and then a car(one of those crappy 4 cylinder jappy noisy things), so I ran out to the highway and looked down and saw a car backing up about 150 yards down the road, then turn up a county road right there! I got in the wifes car and drove down there, and the guy was sitting in his car pulled off the road on an old railroad bed right next to the road. I went on down the road and turned around, and came back up and turned onto the county road and he was crossing the road going into the corner of the neighbors property, at our corner! I drove by and got a liscense number, and the guy just looked at me like he was supposed to be there. I called that landowner and asked her if there was anyone hunting her land, and she said no, and if they were there to find out who they were. I knew when I saw him that he worked at the plant up the road from me due to his being dirty, and they just had shift change 10 minutes before! I came back by and he had left, but I saw him going on up the road. I waited a bit, and drove up the road, and found him sitting in the parking lot at the plant where he works! I came home, and continued working on my deer, and in the next two hours, that car drove by two more times and turned and went down the county road, but never stopped again. The landowner wanted me to go check her property out, and see if I could find his deer or any blood, but I found nothing.... I spent the day pretty torn as to what to do about it, my dad kept telling me I should call him in, but he saw me drive by him 3 times, and our car sits right in the driveway, so it wouldnt be difficult for him to figure it out, and I dont want some kind of revenge crap started.......

What would you guys have done? Let it go, since it doesnt seem that he connected?

Or call it in, since he fired a shot less than 100 yards from my neighbors house and into a small pasture where he mules are at, along with tresspassing when he went to look for it?

That is a tough one. Just letting him know you heard him shoot may be enough.

Well, of course I have a biased opinion because of my job, but I would have called it in or taken action myself if it was in my county. Conservation Agents have a lot of territory to cover, and usually only one Agent per county so they need all the help from citizens they can get. Im friends with a few of them and they absolutely appreciate any info they can get. Just because you call it in doesn't mean that they will just go confront him. Its likely that the Agent would work it another way and make an effort to set up on him and catch him in the act so you would be off the radar. They can run his license and get some background info if they dont have it already, and then develop a plan on how to catch him. ANY tip they get is well worth it, trust me. Chris

Thats why I asked you guys... I was still torn about it, and had to go to town, and needed to stop into the bowshop.. As luck would have it, a friend of mine, who is also one of the countys two game wardens was there. I took him aside and discussed it with him.. gave him the plate number, and he ran it and got a name and address. Im not sure they are going to the guys house from the way he acted, but he did take some notes and has a name and address, and knows where he works. Another note, is that the mdc, and this warden has had several run ins with employees from this plant, and they are always under some scrutiny by the mdc around here.. So, Not sure what will be done, but I brought it to their attention;; If nothing else, they may patrol the area a little more often in the next week or so, and like ccso640 said, may just catch him or one of the others in the act.

I'd place a call to your local agent. Nothing is going to happen to him, but at least the local agent will have the info for future use if need be. He's actually done nothing wrong, in the eyes of the law, at least as far as anyone can prove. The agent is not going to contact him, because he has nothing to charge him with. But, it's still good for the agent to have the info on him, because if he comes back & you or the landowner have a second encounter with him, there'll be record of it.

Not a bad way to handle that at all...Do you think we could get a co-op type meeting for the area? I could set some stuff up with the MDC and it looks like you have a good connection with the wardens...

Don't know but co-ops would get more people on board with protecting each others property's.

Ive thought of that same thing Thayer.. I actually bought one of my neighbors a membership last year for Christmas, and we also have another landowner almost a mile away doing some serious management on his property. I think it would be something to check into for sure.

I think a plat map for our area and hi lite the property's that are involved along with a basic plan would be a great place to start.

You don't want to start a co-op off with too many rules. It's better to just ease into it.

Do you still have my number?

I used to live in salem then we moved to lynex before we moved to farmington. I worked for salem regrigeration when I was there and we went down that road a few times. you mentioned that the man was dirty. I remember noticing that even the trees down that road were black coverd in coal.

Theyve really cleaned up a lot in the last several years, I think the EPA or some other agency cracked down a bit. We dont get the dust like years ago. 15 years ago, you could really smell it strongly at our house a mile away, but we dont smell it anymore, and dont get black dust at home. Dad works there, and he gets dust on his truck in the parking lot, but thats about it.

How long ago did you live here and work at Salem Refrig.?

911 Immediately !!

NO slack.

Last Saturday, my son called me from his stand saying he saw guys get out of a car and shoot across the road. I 911'd from my stand.

Countys came by to check it out. As it were they were upset with themselves for choosing the wrong way (by luck) to get to the spot and pissed the purp. They were going to town to look for the vehicle and would keep an eye open.
