really late pouts

2058 Views 28 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Hawk
After hammering the racoon so the Hazelville hens could again hatch eggs . I SAW 1980,S TYPE HATCHES IN THE LAST 2 YEARS AFTER PRE **** CONTROL 2 YEARS OF ZERO PRODUCTION.
The 2 years with the good production were dry years , as good as it can get for turkey to hatch eggs. This year it was wet early . instead of zero floods the baby river here flooded at least 6 times. Surely with heavy rains the production will go down , I HAVE BEEN HOPING TO SEE THE FACT THAT EGG SUCKERS ARE UNDER CONTROL will allow for the hatch to not be to bad .There are a lot of young hens and i even have one running around with 14 pouts . THE H TO P SO FAR IS WELL AHEAD OF 3.0 . IT APPEARS THERE ARE MORE HENS WITHOUT CHICKS AS ONE WOULD EXPECT WITH HIGH WATERS BUT THE ABILITY TO HAVE POUTS SEEMS TO STILL BE ABOVE 2/3. AGAIN NUMBERS NOT SEEM SINCE THE 1980,S
TODAY I GOT A PICTURE THAT SAYS THOSE GENNYS ARE STILL WORKING HARD TO PRODUCE CHICKS . MAYBE THE HEN SUCCESS IS EVEN HIGHER THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS .

DOES putting the pest racoon under control work . Hell yes it does.

That's amazing Hazel!

How old you reckon' those poults are?

If at 1st you don't succeed, try, try again!
Saw a hen with two poults in the grassy ditch on 50 highway yesterday about 6:30 pm around Warrensburg. They were not even half the size of momma and she wasn't all that big herself.

Better late than never. They have plenty of time to grow before winter
Saw a bunch of small poults the other night. Maybe a late hatch is good. The raccoons have been busy committing suiside by vehicle in high numbers lately. Nothing makes you smile like the whole family smeared on the blacktop.

I haven't seen a turkey poult one around here but I did see a quail hen with about a dozen poults earlier in the week. The poults were about twice the size of a bumblebee.

That was in the river bottom that flooded multiple times thru mid June. It is getting hard to keep up with all the hens after three years of great hatches. The first year i was confident that 11 of the 14 remaining hens were able to raise a brood after no pouts had been produced in 2 years. Those pouts produced 52 pouts when all their eggs did not get sucked. THE HEN NESTING SUCCESS WAS ALSO WAY ABOVE WHAT THE MO SNAP SHOTS ARE GIVING FROM A AREA WITH A SERIOUS DIVERSITY ROBBING RACOON PROBLEM.
Last year with the additional hens from that great hatch i was not able to figure out how many pouts were produced or really if very many hens did not have pouts.I know that again well over 50 pouts were produced MANY OF THE TURKEY WILL BE FILLING IN TO THE SURROUNDING AREA WHERE THE RACOON IS PROBABLY NOT SO HAMMERED.
I thought that in the conditions this year having anything close to a 2.5 h to p ratio would be great but i guess those young Genies never got the memo that they are not supposed to be productive.
It appears that with the adjustment of egg sucker density back to where it was 30 years ago when fur paid a great price we have a OLD NORMAL TO TAKE THE PLACE OF THE FRAUDULENT NEW NORMAL OF CONSERVATION MAL PRACTICE.This spring grandchildren will see good turkey hunting with a ample supply of 3 year old toms . In three more years those grandchildren will see the greatest quality turkey hunting this world has ever produced because this time we know what it takes to have the world,s great turkey / mocking birds.
This revelation which started out as a little snow ball will continue to gin size as the pudding is sampled . At least mdc collected the historical data that shows one where to look . With the fad in pop science for models one would think mdc scientists would jump on this truism to develop some outstanding models.

We were getting turkey pics almost daily on our fields with no poults in sight and just on this pull for the last two weeks there are poults with the hens in almost every pic. Happy to see them now, I guess they were just hidden in the beans in the past pics.

Those roosting sized birds have good survival possibilities. I've only seen 9 do far this year , but they were all flying sized poults. You have a welcomed sight there.

Ain't seen a single poult. The summer PHR for me is about 20:0 or worse (don't do the survey). Obviously some multiple sightings in that number, but a heck of a bunch aren't Talked to a few folks who have seen a few poults. Overall though the hatch sucked yet again. Statewide will be <1:1. Probably about 0.7-0.8:1

What county?
What county?
Why where else but the Kingdom of Callaway of course :D

Been seeing a lot of poults, those where the first I'd seen that size, I'd say they were a month ahead of a lot of the poults I've seen.

Do you have a survey card?

If you don't have a card someone with one can probably put all your zeros on theirs. :D
My June card was 20 hen, 0 poults
July 28 hens, 4 poults (with 1 hen), August so far, 9 hens, 0 poults. Gasconade county.
In Phelps County I have seen poults with every hen so far this spring and summer. Had a hen and 10 poults all about Cornish hen size walk in front of the truck this morning. The wife and I had to stop so they all could cross the road safely. Lol
