I was cuttin the horns off a buck the other day and the skull plate cracked right between the horns. Is there any way that ya'll know of to fix this? They aren't all the way split through.....but its close. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

You could either form some wood to fit in where the brain was, or you could fill that area with Bondo.

Plumber's GOOP is an all-around good glue for bonding two different types of things together if you go the wood route.

:stirpot: Don't forget to lean the halves out a little more to get some more spread while you're making the fix! :stirpot: :hysterical:

I bet Bondo would be the easiest fix.

I have had good luck with that using super glue "GEL". The regular super glue is too thin and the pourus skull plate soaks it up. The gel will do the job though. I don't have very many of mine mounted,,so I have to repair three or four sets when they have fallen or gotten dropped and split in half.

No I'm not plannin on havin em mounted. I just planned on tackin em up downstairs or maybe in one of the buildings outside. In fact I wasn't even gonna put em on an antler mounting bracket. I usually just put a nail above the skull cap and one below the skull cap and call it good.

Parker would a feller put that bondo directly into the crack from the underside.....where the brain was? How should it be applied.....thin or thick? Where do you buy it? Super glue gel might work too. Where might I get that?

And no worries about the spread. He's got a 16 or 17 inch spread without my help. With my help tho.....I'm thinkin 20+ outta really look good :claphands:

My cousin went to the taxidermy school down in the Ozarks and he did a great job fixing up a rack that everyone kept throwing back into the pile because it was broken. He used bondo on it. You could put the bondo on from the front, back, or both depending whether you care about it showing or not. It's pretty easy to work with and smooth out and it can be sanded easily. It's body filler for auto repairs, and you can get it at any auto parts store or Wal-Mart.
