Ok say mama hen gets ran over on the road will the youngsters live this time of year ?

I think a survival of something like 3 poults per brood is considered good under ideal conditions. I'm guessing it would be nearly impossible for even that many to survive without Mom around.

But that's an uneducated guess.

I'd say it would depend on how big the poults are. The older they are, the better their chances. I think they can fly up to roost around 3 weeks old which is important for survival. By then I'd say they are catching their own bugs and such, but could sure use momma to tell them when danger is near. Not sure if another hen would "adopt" them or not, but if so that would give them a better chance.
