Leaving tomorrow morning for a 10 day stint in Ok. This will be only my 3rd time hunting the full sized whitetail. I shot a little basket racked buck on the first trip to Nebraska and then skunked the following trip.

Anyhow, I very much enjoy this site and following along with all the adventures and misadventures. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute something entertaining over the next couple weeks, so I'll take you guys along for the ride.

Trigger warning: I'm happy shooting does and little bucks, so don't give me any ****. I'm looking at you @CamoNinja .

Hope you have a great hunt.

Pro tip: hunt near a corn feeder - most of them have a 16-point typical or two bedding nearby.

Haha I wish. That’s only allowed on private, we’re hunting public ground
Good luck!

Best of luck, read right here on MWT that 200" 8x8's are as common as starlings in OK. :D

Have a great time!

Good Luck and keep us informed
Good luck, 10 days, no need to be trigger happy!
Good luck. I was just at Durant day before yesterday . It was 40 degrees. Hope the weather holds for you.
Day one is on the books. Arrived at the campsite around 10-11 this morning. My buddy was on stand somewhere so I set up my camp and waited for him to come back in. He spent a couple hours playing tour guide showing me around the wma, then we parted ways and went out for the evening hunt. I set up a stand site that gave me a good view of a couple large clearings with heavy timber surrounding. Only saw one deer, a little 8 point that cruised by about 165 yards away. Thought I’d see more from a tree with a view like that. Maybe tomorrow.
Good Luck ! Waiting to hear the story of the big buck you shoot.

Are pigs fair game this hunt?
Yep pigs are on the menu. In fact I’m currently right up hill from a creek that allegedly has some hogs in it. Getting blasted pretty good with wind so as soon as I finish my lunch moving down into the draw where it’s calmer.

I don’t think I’m doing anything up here but blowing my scent around. That may work for bringing in money-grubbing-soul-sucking harpies, but probably not so much for whitetail deers. I’d better scoot before one of those harpies shows up.

Well I did an evening stand and then the next morning down in that creek bottom. Logged a total of about 8 hours in that tree. Never saw a living thing except a couple ducks that floated down the creek behind me. Not sure if duck is allowed during the archery deer season. I should find out, one of them gave me a condescending look.... According to the other guys I’m with we all got shut out yesterday morning. Nothing was moving.

Today I’m up on a ridge top I found last night. There’s 3 or 4 rows of timber running down the ridge with large open grassy areas in between. I’m sitting a break in one of those rows with another small stream behind me and the best trail I’ve seen so far crossing the stream is about 10 yards away. I hate being right on top of trails and would absolutely love to be someplace with better visibility where I could use my longer sight pins and cover more ground, but there’s just not a lot of stand suitable trees so spot selection is slim. Hunting off the ground isn’t a good option either as you go from low visibility to almost no visibility. Tall grass, thick timber, etc.

On the upside though, one of the guys I helped with some elk scouting last year showed up in camp last night. After talking a while he said if I didn’t have any luck this morning I can come hunt his private land tonight and tomorrow morning. Apparently there is a lot more deer, but not that many big bucks as they get picked off by the neighbors. I’ve not even been within a hundred yards of a deer for the last three days, so at this point I’m more than willing to shoot a doe or a smaller buck. Actually I was more than willing to do that on the first day.

It’s all about the points for team 1!

Public land whitetails are turning out to be pretty dang tough. I have nothing but respect for the guys that can consistently pull it off on public dirt. Heck it can be a challenge just to find a parking spot on the weekends. There was four trucks parked at the gate for the walk in area I was hunting on Sunday.

You know 20', sometimes it's like you don't know me at all. As if I had a choice....

Long drive and expensive tag to shoot a doe....

The don't do tags here. You have a bag limit of six deer two can be antlered, just for buying a deer license.

I've been sitting here thinking about it the last hour or so. Think I'm going to tough it out in the public land. Better to go down swinging than to give up and take a freebie.

I'm heading up to Nebraska Thursday afternoon to see my buddy and his family. Three more days to try to figure this place out a little

It's a marathon not a sprint. Stay positive and you'll get onto something. 3 more days not counting today is a long time.

Good luck on the private ground tonight! Public is pretty hit or miss. Living by the "get there early and walk a mile in" type of advice doesn't always work.

The most success I have had on public for deer, is stay put at those 10-2 hours. A lot of guys leave or go get lunch at those times. Bump deer without even knowing it.
