well I just got the heads up that one if not two Granddaughters might want to go hunting this year 10 & 12 yo. I have a Marlin 30-30 with a youth stock but it has a crappy 22 cal scope ( I dont know why) and them tall see through scope rings.. the rings are a for sure replacement but I'm thinking a decent for a 30-30 scope is in order, preferably maybe straight 4x? I dont want to throw much at it because it might be a one n done scenario.

any suggestions or anyone have something in their closet that might work well??

I should be able to loan you a .243 with a decent scope on it bean. If you can find a decent scope and rings I bet that would be a good investment for your granddaughters as well.

Nikon Prostaff, I'd get the 2x7x32 if it was me. Real good scope for the money, I put them on all my muzzleloaders. Should be able to pick one up for way less than 200. Might try Natchess or WingSupply, One of them had a sale not to long ago. I think my 30-30 has a Buriss 4x but I don't see many around anymore, don't really look either.

You can get a 3x9 Bushnell for $68 at Walmart.

You might also try a decent red dot, like the Ultradot.

What Bob 58 said.
Field of view is important to get on target.
This young you are not going to let them take long shots anyway.
I think you are in for a great season. Don't make them field dress the deer unless they want to.
It is okay for them to help. You will have a time to remember.
They have some reduced recoil loads for a 30-30 too, would be good I'd think. Hope they have some luck and get into it enough you upgrade. :D

A set of Weaver bases and rings are about as economical as it gets and are a solid mounting system for a scope. I like the Talley 2-pc. Lightweight best, but that is about twice the price of the Weaver.

I would put a scope on it. I think the magnification is a plus to make sure of good shot placement. A good 2x7 is about perfect, but a fixed 4X wouldn't be a bad choice.

I gave my son a very nice old JM marked Marlin 336C with Talley Lwt. and a Burris 2x7x35 with the #4 reticle. He has killed a pile of deer with it.

GG i might just take you up on that..My Granddaughters live in Tenn and its been 3 years since they have come out and it looks as if they may be moving further away soon so I'm not hopeful on making this a yearly event..just going to enjoy this year and go from there if it looks hopeful then yea maybe. Son usually just shows up but the whole tribe will be coming this deer season and I just want to be prepared if one of the little darlings decides to really go out.

not throwing that kinda $$ at a maybe hunt but we do have 2x7 on the wife's 30-30 and I agree its about the perfect scope for one

Have seriously considered a red dot but was wondering if I'd have to put on a picatinny rail? I guess I need to pull it out of Safe Queen status to see what I have to work with. I seriously have not looked at that rifle in 3 years

thought about a cheap Wal Mart scope but JMO those 3x9's just add too much weight to a 50-75 yrd shooting rifle

yep thats what I was going to do altho from what little I have read there is some difference but not overly soo..maybe need to explore other manufactures other than Hornaday

I guess thats a title for another thread
I've got a straight 4X on my Marlin. It works, it's lightweight, and I've had that scope on .270s, .30/06s, .308s, all kinds of stuff, and I've killed deer out to 400+ yards with it. No reason at all it wouldn't work out to 80-100 yards.

brand?
It's a Leupold, I bought it used at a gun show about 35 years ago, and sent it back to Leupold for a cleaning awhile back. For a new scope, I'd try to find a Weaver, though the Weaver brand has been discontinued, they should still be out there for around $120. Those are really good scopes for the money.

I'm thinking maybe a shotgun scope would be good.. certainly handle the recoil
It would do the job, and the parallax would be good for the short ranges, too.

I put a redfield 2x7x33 on my Marlin 336, mounted with Talley LW rings.

It's very good at doin what it needs to do.
