Contrary to reports of the devastation to Wi.'s deer herd and more significantly bucks a new report released by the Wi. DNR doesn't support the anti crossbow agenda of the Wi. Bow Hunters.

The report puts together success rates by weapon and actual bucks harvested. While the success rate was shown to be higher, the actual number of bucks taken by vertical archery exceeded crossbows.

    Hunter Success Rate:
    Firearms: 17.7%
    Archery: 15.8%
    Crossbow: 23.7%

    Actual Number of Bucks Harvested:
    Firearms: 95,093
    Archery: 19,645
    Crossbow: 16,096

Here is a link to the report:

BS660, do you think that more bucks were killed by vertical bows simply because the number of actual archery hunters (those toting vertical bows:)) is still great than crossbows? percentage wise more bucks are kill by xguns!

The success rate tells you what I have always said, crossbows are EASUIR to hunt with, just like firearms are easier than crossbows!

    Go Cards!

I wonder what the numbers would look like if they had separated the more difficult and lower success rate traditional archery stats from compound archery ?

I suggest you read the entire report. Which is more important actual dead animals or statistics. Towards the end of the report, the number of hunters using gun and vertical bow who killed 2 bucks is 47%, while those using gun and crossbow who killed 2 was 41%. The point is crossbows aren't the devastating weapon it has been portrayed to be.

As a rule archery hunters are better hunters, so when the firearms season come by, they know where to be and not rely on luck!!

So where is the threat? The number of hunters or the weapon?

BS660, what I clearly see is that since crossbow were introduced WI has had higher buck harvest than any years prior to their full inclusion.

I'm not sure there is a "threat", just showing that xguns are in FACT easier to hunt with, hence the higher success rate. All you pro xgun guys spewed that they were NOT easier to hunt with, and if they are not easier to hunt with t...they are 100% easier to kill with!

firearms season season never wipe out the herd, so there was no reason to ever think crossguns would do it and we never implied they would. Hey, they are here to stay, hopefully they won't cause any more changes like the reduction in tags when they were implemented!

No, the point is, more bucks are dying now than if crossbows werent legal, and more bucks will die every year as more and more people adopt the crossbow method.

You might also notice that the average age of a vertical archer is under 40 and the crossbow user is over 50. Chances are many of these over 50 hunters are being added to and retained due to the ability to use crossbows.

So you think that the ratio of crossbow hunters to verticals will stay constant over time????

Be curious if they have an accurate guesstimation of what the % of trad hunters would be?

BS660, pretty sure we were all for the partial inclusion at a certain age, I think 55 was one age I thought would be fair....crossbows are here, they are easier and they increase in dead animal numbers.....the two things we said would happen!
