Hello everybody. I have recently become a fan of this site and had a quick question. I am relatively new to deer hunting, as my roommate at Missouri State University introduced me to it a few years ago. As I have become more interested in it, I have started to ask around with some of my friends about land in Kansas. I have been given permission to hunt on 40 acres near Spring Hill, KS. My question is, is 40 acres enough to successfully hunt on? And does anybody know how the healthy the deer are in NE Kansas? I know it is now antlerless season in Kansas, but I am looking forward to next year already! Thanks for any help!

This is a picture of the land.

I would jump on the chance to hunt a privat 40 acre piece of ground in KS. Go get them, and welcome.

Thanks for the replies so far! Only things I'm worried about is where to put a stand and the road that is right next to the property. If anybody looked at the link for Google maps, any ideas on where to put a stand? The field on the land is the L shaped one and the land includes some of that timber. You guys have me thinking I might do a little doe hunting over Winter Break..

It is hard to tell just where your 40 acres of land is by the map. Can you outline it somehow. Then maybe we can give you some suggestions. Even then it would be best to check out the property first hand just before season starts to see just where the deer travel. If you could head out there now and see where the deer paths are going. There life revolves around food and bedding areas but that all changes during the rut.

If you hit the terrain button on your map it will show a little of the terrain in your area. Looks like you might have a small wet weather creek running through the section. Might be a good place to watch.

Um, hate to tell you but it's not doe season right now in KS. It's regular archery season. There is an extended doe season for firearms but that is Jan.1-10.

There are good deer in the area, just gotta wait and see what you find.

For right now, you might just try doing some ground hunting to get a "feel" for the land and that way you can do some good scouting of where to make a set-up.

Yes sorry I guess I wasn't clear on that. I know that extended doe season hasn't started yet.

No problems. Just didn't want anyone to find out the hard way. I actually hunt some ground about 5 miles south of you. There are good deer around.

Get you a trail cameras and 50 lbs of corn, you'll se what is in the area, and if you find a good enough spot, baiting is legal. Its best to go walk the place, photos are always decieving. One tornado or straight line winds going through a farm can change it 100%, sometimes good, sometimes bad.

I would
1. Walk it and determine where they are eating ie: corn field.....bean field...alfalfa
2. Try to find where they are sleeping, look for a spot this time of yr sheltered from the strong north winds. Remember it doesn't take much to hide them and keep em warm. Don't be afraid to jump em out of their beds, just make it a one time deal if you can.
3. Find the best ambush spot between #1 and #2. Funnels, fence crossings, edges, anything that makes the deer walk a certain direction. Keep wind direction in mind the whole time looking for a stand site If this sounds confusing, U2U me and I will go walk the place with you and help ya pick out a spot. Cheers

You interested in trying some bowhunting? If you are and on home over Christmas, you need to head over to BB Archery in Raytown. They'd help you figure out draw length, etc., and let you shoot som bows to see what you think of it.

Thanks for all the help guys! It has been awhile since I have been able to get on here with finals and everything going on. But now winter break is here! I should be heading out to the land sometime before Christmas to check it out for the first time. Might also do a little coyote hunting while I'm at it. If anybody has anymore advice I'm open to it. Thanks again!

I would do some looking around up by the skinny part of the L where the woods juts out into it and it is near what appears to be a crop field...good luck. There appears to be a house in one of the other corners?
