Naming deer/bucks

Why do you name deer and if you are against naming deer why?

The only reason I name deer is it far easier to say I saw Lefty, as opposed to hey I say that buck with the big left side and droptine, but the right side was stunted a year. Now, I don't think we get overly clever with the deer names, but who knows!

I named one deer years ago. He had 4 white boots as a spike. Neighbor got pics of him 4 years later as an upper 150's 10 point.

I seldom name a deer unless it has an abnormality
Same reason as OP. Too hard to say I saw the buck that was a tight 8 pointer 3 years ago, a decent 8 2 years ago and the double main beam last year.

We usually just describe the rack to give them a sort of name cause we hunt as a group so everyone knows what we are talking about. For example last year we had a wide 11pt,the big 8,the forked 9,do not shoot 9,split g2 9,big 6,and a few other bucks with various discriptions.Once you have enough shooters and no shooters hunting with a group of people you best have a way to determine what deer is what or it will get really confusing when trying to manage and having deer you Do Not Want Killed!

For me its the same as people. Not looking for a name. Something catches your eye, you say it out loud and it just sticks. Some guys get the nickname stinky, got some girl friends we call Emerson (Emerson big ole ti***es)

Exactly - we don't name deer to be cool or act like TV hunters - we name deer so that if a deer is spotted/killed the rest of the crew knows exactly which deer we are referring too without being there/seeing the buck.

Over the course of the years we get thousands of pictures of the deer on my place and every decent buck is given a name and the pictures of that particular deer are all filed in a folder bearing the name we chose for that deer. We view each deer from as many angles as possible to try and get an age/score estimate to make our decisions.

There are basically four people that I allow to regularly hunt my place other than youth hunters who have carte blanche permission to shoot whatever they'd like, and before the season all four of us get together to decide which bucks we feel are ready for harvest based on age/antler characteristics.

In order to practice QDM all hunters need to be able to identify all target bucks on sight and the only way to do this is by having a name for each shooter buck. We can't use names like the big ten or big eight because there may be numerous big 10's and 8's in any given year. When you use a unique name and say you saw "hightower" or "swooper", every one of the other guys knows exactly which deer you are referring too rather that just big 10.

Some may call it silly - we call it a way to know exactly which deer each of us is referring too at the conclusion of a hunt!

My farm, I don't name deer just use the rack description as the name... big 8, heavy 9 etc.
The big lease with 4 of us on it, we usually come up with a name just for ID purposes of shoot/don't shoot.
Its usually when an unknown/new face shows up it can be a sh*t show for a second to get binos on it and decide if it's go time.

Exactly you have to have identification of deer to manage.Once regular descriptions run out then you gotta have some type of unique descriptive name indeed. If not no shoot 10 that's 140"s gets shot just the same as the 6.5 year old 10pt because no one knows what is what

I have one of those Hoffa bucks currently, sept he is nowhere near a boomer. But for the last 4 seasons I have gotten pictures of a mature 8pt which this past season where I estimated him at 7.5-8.5 years old he grew some crab claws and became a 10pt.Every year through about mid October he is by my personal foodplot eating and enjoying mineral and every year he disappears till next start of the season. There is a big 6500 acre managed piece of ground next door and none of them ever see him either. He is a ghost all hunting season
Wonder if deer name us? They may be like guys it smells like “Marlboro Man” is here today and he brought along “Sir Fartsalot”. Just kidding. I hunt alone so no need to name deer for others to recognize.

That's the thing with y'all naming deer...
#1. none of you all come up with original or even funny names for the deer. It's all the same, I can probably scroll a deer hunting page and find at least 5 deer people call hightower, or high and tight, or heartbreaker.
#2. Your neighbor has that same deer on camera and has a different name picked out for him.
#3. By naming a deer people feel entitled to get to kill that certain deer, and then more often then not they get up in arms when somebody else kills it.

I'll add that yes when I bought my first farm at 24 years old I named the deer. Then I realized how dumb I sounded, and completely stopped doing that.

Go hunt with 10 people on 2000 acres and see how confusing it gets if no one knows what anyone is talking about deer wise.Deer are free to get killed by whoever and I only care about what people do on our property.Deer die in different ways but they die 100 percent of time if you shoot them and that's all you can control

Meh been told worse.

I grow big deer, and keep a record of em. I'm still trying to find one that hits that magical 200 inch mark.

When that happens, maybe I'll find a name for him.
