Took my 6 year old son out for his first youth hunt. Seen one doe at 7:35am and she came to about 40 yards and stopped. Never gave a broadside shot until she move west and now she was about 60 yards broadside. He got on her and this was he first deer so it took a little bit to get settled. He shot and it appeared to be a miss after looking.

After that we went back to the house and practiced shooting some more. Shot about a box of 30/30 shells then he and I were feeling better about it and was he excited about his shooting and decided he was good to go.

    10-28-17PM.

Youth hunt number two with my son. Slow evening until about 6:15. One doe came out at about 65 yards broadside. Again took a bit for him to get settled but after he did she move in to about 30 yards. By that time doe number 2 came out and she was spooky. She then went out to about 50 yard and turned broadside again facing the other doe. He got on her and I talked him through his breathing and told him when he was ready to shoot. Boom and then she runs off tail flickering. I watched the shot and it looked good. Doe number 2 stayed in the field and watched us walk to the spot of the shot. Found hair and then went to where she went in the woods. As I stepped into the woods I seen the white belly. He was super excited and of course I was too.

Double lung and she ran about 60 yards. He said later that night when it all sank in that he cant stop thinking about how good he did today and how he provided food for the family.

And its the same one I shot my first deer with 23 years ago. Kind of special knowing that and its the same one my niece shot hers with 10 years ago when I took her on her first youth hunt.

Finished the second half of youth season tagged out. An 80 yard shot dropped him in his tracks. Had four bucks come out and he picked this one because it was giving him the best shot. Proud dad moment. 20171125_172204.jpg 20171125_172247.jpg

Yes it is. I think I might have to go back to using it also next year. It's a lot less of mess on the inside and less damage to the meat.

Outstanding job by the young man :brownnose: My favorite hunt stories on here , by a wide margin , are the ones about young folks getting their first deer .

Congrats on a great buck for your son!

BTW, my wife killed her first deer opening weekend of rifle season with a 1961 Marlin 336SC in 30/30..... Great little deer rifles. Hoping my nephew wacks his first next fall with it. Football got in the way this year. Assuming my wife lets him borrow her deer rifle.... :D
