I decided I needed to make a somewhat stouter bow if I want to kill a deer farther than 10 or 12 yards. I took the sister stave to the previous hedge bow I made that I posted a step by step thread as to how I made the bow and made one longer and stronger.

The previous bow was 63 inches long with a 5 3/4 inch brace height that pulled only 33 lbs at my 24 inch draw length. A good target bow or a very close range deer bow with a well placed sharp steel broadhead.

This new one is 67 inches long with a brace height of 6 inches that pulls 47 lbs at my 24 inch draw length. Plenty for sticking a deer this coming season.

Very nice looking!
I still haven't gotten up enough nerve to bend the tips back into a recurve. The decision to use a steam heat source or my usual dry heat with the heat gun is something I need to experiment with. Nothing more depressing than to draw back a bow that you've put in hours and hours of work into and it snaps at full draw....been there....done that.

Good looking stick and string! Good luck this fall!
Start flinging some rocks!

Only way I would sling a rock (flint arrowhead) is if the deer is really close. I have both flint and steel arrowheads in my quiver. Have to make a humane kill or pass on the shot.
Steam bending isn't that difficult, let your youtube foo guide you Bill.

Believe me I've watched most of them...just hesitant for this old dog to learn a new trick. So if it breaks...I'll just start another one. I have plenty of hickory staves but only one hedge stave left and its gonna be a tricky one.

Practice on some scrap or something you have a lot of. Nothing ventured nothing gained old man.:D

Update...…..

I'm in the process of bare shaft tuning 6 bamboo arrows for this bow for deer hunting next month. Have to do one at a time and so far I've only had to cut off a couple of inches resulting in plus or minus 30 inches and weighing in around 555 grains without the feathers. I'll check out their flight at 20 yards tomorrow in the back yard without feathers. That will be the true test for these arrows to fit this bow. Pics to follow.

I hope these arrows fly better than your other ones.

Out of the 6 I made last night bare shaft tuning at 10 yards in my garage only four passed the 20 yard test in the back yard today. Now I have to take those two with the weak spine and cut off a bit more to match the other 4 that are grouping well in the target.

Once I get the two shooting like the others I will make fletchings from the turkey wing feathers that our MWT members donated to me this last spring. Once those are applied I plan on using some old four blade Herters broadheads that I picked up at an antique store that were made in 1965. They need cleaned up a bit and totally resharpened for the coming deer season next month. They weigh in at 180 grains each which should match closely to my practice target tips on the arrows now.

I will add that with more practice my groups will move closer to the intended bulls eye on the target. All instinctive and no aiming at all.
Congratulations on another Great Looking Bow Bill!!!!

How much will you cut off of the two that didn’t pass the test?
