Posted this over on the predator forum, but figured I would get an answer quicker here.

So we are new to shotgunning for coyotes & bobcats and hope someone could give us some info.

What are the regs on what size shot you may use on furbearers & how many shells in the gun.

Same with rifles & how many cartridges.

I can't find this info anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there is a magazine capacity maximum for shotgun or rifle either one when hunting fur bearers. Shot size isn't regulated either.

As long as you are not hunting for those durring a open deer rifle season.

Ok so it appears that there are only regs on the capacity of rifles during the deer season.

However I did find this in the Wildlife Code.

I am perceiving this as you cannot ecxeed more than 3 shells in a shotgun at any time other than while hunting deer.

"(G) Firearms. Firearms may be used to
take wildlife (except beaver, mink, muskrat,
river otter, turtles, and fish) during the open
seasons, with the following limitations: For
hunting game birds (except the crow), pistols,
revolvers, and rifles may not be used. Except
for hunting deer, any shotgun having a capacity
of more than three (3) shells must have the
magazine cut off or plugged with a device
incapable of removal through the loading end,
so as to reduce the capacity to not more than
three (3) shells in magazine and chamber
combined. Fully automatic firearms are prohibited."

Anyone else getting the same out of this?

That's what I get out of it. With deer it's 10 +1 in a rifle, so it wouldn't make sense to limit a shotgun's capacity to 3 for deer. I only use my shotgun for turkey and squirrels, and the plug is always in there.

That's the way it reads to me as well. I would have bet that it used to be legal to hunt yotes etc with the plug out. I wonder if the code has been this way long??? Cause we used to hunt the yotes with the plug out back when I hunted them every winter.

That was my assumption about rabbits too, been doin it for years, but the dude at MDC went back to the 50's and found NOTHING in the regs that allowed the plug to be out of your shootgun for ANY kind of hunting for any species, with exception of the light goose order which went into affect recently. Plugs were made mandatory in MO when they outlawed market gunning and there has been no change since. Other states it varies widely depending on what yer hunting.

Just keep the plug in on the shotgun. You won't need any more than 3.

I asked about the reason for 3 shell limit on the MDC thread.Best I can tell is its a old law from way back for the "market"hunters of waterfowl.Thats what,100 years ago?
No one asked me,but I think its an outdated law and there is absolutly no reason to plug a shotgun anymore. That what game limits are for.
