CHESTNUT AUCTION ITEM 1

Gurgalunas is donating FIVE chestnut trees for bid as one group. These are all 4-6' tall.

These Chestnut trees are two years old, and grown entirely in root pruning pots to prevent girdling roots and promote fibrous root growth. Nuts were collected from Dunstan chestnut trees, and should be completely blight resistant.

They were finished in 3 gal fabric pots, so should be ready to take off once planted. I'd expect these trees to have their first burs within 3-5 years, depending on growing conditions.

Trees are located in Platte City MO (KC, Northwest side) and can be picked up there. I can meet locally or we can try to arrange a pony to the pheasant hunt or anywhere else a truck may be going.

Auction ends on ...2/1/22 @ 7pm

What is the optimal place to plant these? Full sun, shaded, etc?

Give them at least a half day of sun. My main orchard is full sun, and I have trees on the margins of timber plots too. @letemgrow had some mortality in exposed sites during an extreme summer, irrc. Not my experience, though... I guess ideally, plant them with some afternoon shade, but they are pretty resilient, even in full sun, by my experience.

Obviously, the better the soil, the better the growth. My orchard is planted on "heavily eroded" soils, so a fair amount of clay, and going well 5 years in.

By my experience, they are pretty low maintenance, especially after being in the ground a year or two. Make sure not to plant them in a wet spot. Rocky soil isnt a problem, as long as you get them established.

EDIT: I would plan to protect them, either with tubes or cages, as the deer do browse and rub them.

A full discussion of planting, locating, protecting will be provided to the winning bidder, specific to their property. Don't hesitate to ask me questions...
