Does this mean, crossbows are not eradicating all the deer?

Hunters checked 67,487 deer during the 2020-2021 archery deer season. This year’s archery deer harvest total was 10% below last year’s record harvest and 8% higher than the previous five-year average.

The MDC said from the outset that inclusion of crossbows would increase participation in the archery segment and archery harvest would increase as a result.
Not sure why people continue to indicate anything different.

We've been hovering around that 300K mark for a while now....

Seems to me, and I am no deer biologist, but if you are able to kill 280-300K deer each year, the herd dynamics seems to be in a good place. :D

BUT BUT...
Because the rifle season is placed where it is, the buck:doe ratio is all whack. that very well could be true

not to go all hawk here, but archery was likely down due to the early firearms placement

I honestly don't care to debate it, but just because we are averaging the same kills totals each year has nothing to do with a balanced age class.

MDC is not wanting to do that Bob, Between CWD, Inusurance Co's, and people not wanting to run into deer with their cars, MDC is not going to do anything that would reduce deer harvest. The thing you should be taking from these numbers is this. Even 5 years after xbow inclusion, the deer harvest has remained fairly steady, if xbows were wiping out all the deer, sooner or later the harvest numbers would start to radically decline.

This gives you the opportunity, to manage the places you hunt as you see fit, and have an enjoyable experience, with lots of deer sightings.

You guys seemed to have a good year, so enjoy it. :D

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri's 2021-2022 deer-hunting season ended Jan. 15 with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reporting a preliminary total deer harvest for the season of 293,670. Of the deer harvested, 143,049 were antlered bucks, 26,599 were button bucks, and 124,022 were does.
Top harvest counties for the overall deer season were Franklin with 6,392 deer harvested, Texas with 5,478, and Callaway with 5,452.
Hunters harvested 297,214 deer during the 2020-2021 deer hunting season with 140,855 being antlered bucks, 28,652 being button bucks, and 127,707 being does.
“This year’s harvest total was slightly behind last year’s mark and about 3% above the previous five-year average,” said MDC Cervid Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle. “We’ve seen an increasing trend in statewide deer harvest for about the past eight years,” said Isabelle. “The deer population has continued to increase across much of southern Missouri at the same time that we’ve seen a population recovery in most of the counties impacted by the severe hemorrhagic disease outbreak that occurred in 2012.”
ARCHERY DEER RESULTS
Deer hunting ended with the close of the archery season. Preliminary data from MDC showed that hunters checked 60,834 deer during the 2021-2022 archery deer season making it the third highest archery deer harvest on record. Top counties for the archery deer season were Jefferson with 1,563 deer harvested, St. Louis with 1,368, and Franklin with 1,274.
Hunters checked 67,487 deer during the 2020-2021 archery deer season. This year’s archery deer harvest total was 10% below last year’s record harvest and 8% higher than the previous five-year average.

yup, got it, MDC doesn't want to do their jobs, because it would be a little more work!

That is not their only job Bob, catering to deer hunters desires is not their only job.... You don't seem to get that.

All Missourians are benefactors, not just hunters.

Their on;ly job is to be stewards of the resources, doing what is BEST for the animals!
Only worrying about Big horns for you, is not what they deem as best for the animals. :D

a balanced age structure is best for the herd!

It would be nice if the 28,652 button bucks that got whacked could be cut in half or more, but most hunters don't care enough and are definitely not diligent enough to wait for the doe.

At least the MDC didn't mess with the turkey Season, although they still won't do all it takes for the birds!

It isnt that people dont care enough to not shoot button bucks.... in a ton of instances they just cannot tell the difference.

Want some severe underreporting of harvest? Then outlaw BB harvest... because after they are dead, hunter walks up and finds they are buttons, they dont get reported. They still get killed (which is evidently what you are worried about) but they dont get reported. Maybe not reporting that they die (but they still die) makes you feel better about it??

The button bucks are leaving anyway, why not shoot them? Its almost like they're asking for it.
