daughter is wanting a little payback from a crappy rifle season and thinking a little go with the smokepole this year.so what do you guys think the lowest charge and still kill a deer with no problem.thinking the least amount of kick for her,so it prolly gonna be sabot.i'd love to load up 400 grain lead conical with 110 grains of powder and say here yah go.but i better not:D

I shot a doe with 85 grns of loose triple se7en pushing a 240 grn. XTP sabot. I really haven't tried much lower than that, but I'm sure others have.

Don't know that much about lighter loads for deer but when I first started out everything I read and was told I needed at least a 200 gr bullet (sabot) and no less than 80 grs by volume of loose Tripple 7 powder. I took my first one with a 220 gr Barnes sabot with 90 grs of loose Tripple 7 powder. Double lung shot with complete pass through. The eight point buck went 50 yards and dropped dead. I wouldn't go under a 200 gr sabot with a minimum of 75 grs of powder. But I'm no expert.

How old is she and what is her ~weight? What does she normally hunt deer with? If she can handle a .243, she should easily tolerate the load MM suggested (200/75). Also depends upon which gun you have her using and whether she can kick your ... :D

If your daughter is using a youth stocked gun, then sholdering a full size gun; the perceived recoil will be greater. Granted in the woods when shoting at a deer she wont feal any recoil at all.
its the recoil at the range that you prolly worring about?

Start her small load 50 grains and light bullet, work up to hunting load as she gets usto it.

i worked my 8 year old from 50 grains to 80 grains in a hr at the range. lose FFF with a patched round ball on my 50 cal.
it took him some getting usto the longer stock.

she is about 5 foot 7 about 120 pounds.i guess she will be shootin the optima pro topped with a Leupold Scope .she been shooting a 6mil remington for years.but a couple of years ago i let her pop my white with a heavy load and a heavy lead bullet.it rocked her pretty bad,but hey she said she could handle it,so needless to say she is a little nervous about it:D

I'd say she'll be alright with about 80grns of powder and a 200grn sabot. Ya gotta figure too that a ML doesn't punch like a centerfire, it's more of a shove. I doubt she'd notice it much if she's shooting at a big ol buck.

My normal load in my Encore, is 90 gr loose 777, and a 240 gr XTP sabot.

When my son started, I think he was shooting a 200 gr, with 70 gr of Pyrodex..... This was out of his Optima. He never shot a deer with it, but it seemed to shoot pretty good a the range. Least out to 50 yds....

we had trackercasey's daughter shooting 300gr slugs with 40gr loose triple 7 and she was hitting the 3'x4' peice of ply at 200yds, with a light charge shot placement is even more critical, make sure she knows to take a good angle shot, it oughta get the job done though

This is about the combination I'm looking at as well.

50 to 80 grains with a roundball or 180 grain bullet/sabot is no problem, I'd suggest 80 grain range (due to accuracy) and your choice of bullet. I KNOW 50 grains with a roundball will kill deer but would rather have a better bullet and a bit more energy.
