Method Bucks Button Bucks Does

Archery 14,814 5439 22,265

Firearms 80,033 27,147 85,918

so if I add up total harvest, then figure out what the total percentage of button bucks are for each season...13% of the harvest for archery season is button bucks, 14% for rifle season...kinda burst the myth that bow hunters can better identify their target...

Considering during archery you can shoot doe or buck on all lands including conservation and during gun most places (public) are 4 pt buck or better only is probably a good reason for archery having killed more buttons.

Dan....I've stayed out of these arguements but will comment on this.

It has to be absolutely true that bowhunters can better identify their targets simply because they are closer. I think the reason those stats are the same is because in general hunters the majority of hunters don't care if they shoot a button buck...if it's brown its down..... or in my casemany guys forget to check for buttons. I usually try not to shoot them but just plain forgot to look at the head of the "doe" I shot this fall.

Another commment....button bucks are very susceptible to being killed by hunters due to their young age and lack of experience.

Archer, I understand completely, you see brown, a deer, and the heart starts a beaten...I have no problem with that...but, there has been made mention numerous times lately that bow hunters on the whole are better hunter than rifle hunters and one bit of evidence is that they see/identify the deer better...

I really bring this up, not to stir the pot (ok, some) but to point out that on the whole, statistics prove, that no matter what weapon we hunt with, we are the same...

what you say is definitely accurate, but that 1% difference equates to gunners killing 22,000+ more bb

Dan: I can only speak for myself. But, in many ways, I am much better with a bow in my hand than I would ever be with a gun. A couple of times I have taken what I consider to be foolish shots with a gun that I would never have even considered with a bow. That's just me though. Oh, and I don't shoot button bucks...................................anymore. It has been several years in fact.:D

and your point is? with 400, 000 more hunters out there than archery season, being able to shoot 300 yards further, and percantage wise there in no statistical difference?

It is also interesting that the total # of bucks to total # of does is smaller with archery than with guns...you would think that with the 4 point rule across most of the state would make fewer bucks legal....guess not, or people are holding out for a buck.

Doe archery harvest=52% of total.
Doe gun harvest = 45% of total.

I guess the bow hunters are better managers. :D

That's assuming that bowhunters don't want to kill button bucks.

Bowhunters tend to be more physically fit, have more hair, and be all around awesome for the most part. That is a statistic that holds water for sure.

my point is is that the 1% +22,000 plus more button bucks killed or that archery has killed 5439 bb and gunners killed 27,147 to date. percentage wise you are correct as I stated in the first post.

i really don't think antone is blasting anyone for shooting button bucks, but rather mentioning that if a larger portion of the bb would be does perhaps there would be more bucks next year.
