I have a chance to lease 800 acres in Kansas at a pretty good price. The county is Chautauqa Unit 12. I have never hunted KS and wanted to know if this Unit is known for producing big deer. One farm joins 180 acre crop feild and it's the only crops in the area for miles. The farms looks to have good bit of timber and creek bottom running through them. Thanks in advance for any advice on the area.

I hunted south of caney once during a special slick head season and they needed it. did not see any big deer, but I am sure there are some in every county in Kansas. Kansas has no deer check in, so what is killed is never totaled up.

Good luck

If I was leasing land in Kansas, a big determining factor would be my chances of drawing the tag so I could hunt it. You may want to contact wildlife and parks over there and discuss with them the odds of drawing in that unit before leasing.(.02) Or make sure the landowner can aquire reasignable tags, so your garunteed a tag..

Henry, last I checked, the re-assignable tags went the way of the dinosaur. But I would definitely check the drawing success rates. Seems the last couple of years KS has had leftover tags in several units.

I agree with Racks. You just never know. I hunt a pretty decent area in KS but haven't seen any really large deer. And it's not pressured at all.

You might look on the KDWP website too if you haven't already to see what info you can glean for that particular area.

Thanks guys for the info. I do realize KS is a draw state and something I would have to consider. I knew KS had left over tags this year due to economy. Not sure about unit 12 having tags left over though. Thanks!!!

Have hunted Unit 12 a number of times. Plenty of deer, seems to be to many. Lots of 130 to 150" bucks, but have seen some bigger hit the dust. You almost always can get a leftover tag because you get your unit and one next to you. Unit 11 always seem to have a ton of left over tags.

Are you looking for anyone to go in with you on the lease? I hunted just north of FT Scott this yr. Seemed to be a great area. They had tags leftover for the last 2 years there. 400 bucks for one deer is a bit steep when its all said and done. I guess my buck cost me close to $1,000.00. It was all do it myself on some private ground, about 450 acres. If I was to do it again, I would get a gun tag and just take off the 2 weeks and give it heck. I bought Archery so I would have more opportunities to hunt. Well, I did, but it also drove costs for transportation and hotels and food. Luckily I killed a good one in Nov early rut. There is also plenty of folks willing to let people hunt their land. So, door knocking could get ya enough land that you could save the lease price.

rangerdvr if my buddy and I go with the KS lease I will probably need a few folks. My buddy found the land and he is looking for some help to get it leased. I am undecided on what I would like to do for a couple of reasons. 1. being i have more out-of-state land now than I can hunt. 2. Another buddy of mine hunted with a outfitter in SW KS this year an killed a 182" 12 pt. with his bow. This outfitter hunters have killed 6 booners this year off his ground. With that said, I am thinking about going with my buddy on this hunt. I don't like hunting with outfitters for the simple fact I can normally hunt more than a week. With all my other land to hunt a week in KS might be all I can hunt so the outfitter hunt might be a better option for me.

Are you speaking about Perry Ross's group. I know he has had a ton of luck this year. He is a close personal friend of my uncle.
