Which is why I generally mess the skivvies when I moved said debris. Harmless or not I still jump every time one appears right in front of me

they are docile, My grandad used them to teach all his grandkids how to handle snakes.

Yep, it was under some garden mesh that had accumulated debris.
Docile is exactly its description.

They drown in heavy rains or I find dead ones after a heavy rain in the yard

And they hide in the grass where they are not noticed until the mower spits out snake parts!
