My uncle bought a briggs and stratton 5hp outboard for his flatbottom at the BPS outlet store. The motor starts and idles fine but when you give it gas it starts to jerk and wont run right. He says it will backfire some too. Is there a low and high idle screw adjustment on it? I dont know anything about it but I told him I would ask around to see what I could learn about it. Sounds like it is getting too much gas? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is it puffing black smoke? If Not it's probably not flooding. If it's backfiring I'd guess that it's got an air leak at the carb o-ring. I'm not sure on that carb, but most of the new B&S carbs have a high speed adjustment & not all have an adjustment screw.
Good luck !!
