Ever have one of those days....thisafternoon we pulled in groups from what looked like miles away, just visible on the horizon...only to ge them to circle just out of range and never commit. 4 dozen full bodies, layout blinds brushed in cornfield, and average callers. I hate not knowing what wasn't perfect....they didn't like something and for the life of us this afternoon we couldn't figure the white cheeks out.

Don't know what's more frustrating...seeing and working hundreds only to get no shots....or going out and not seeing a darned thing.:boohoo::boohoo:

Going out and not seeing anything, especially after a 3 hour drive to a Conservation Area that is managed for waterfowl :mad2:

Been having kinda the same problem with waterfowl the last couple days, they'd work with a couple passes, and responded to the callin' for the most part but just wouldn't commit that last 15 to 20 yards to put their toes in the water. I'd rather have it that way then not see anything IMHO even tho it is frustating at times atleast your seeing them.

We hunted shanks on tuesday and had the same thing with the quackers. We hunted all day and had ducks working all day and couldn't do anything to make em finish. We even waited till daylight to see where they were going and set up right there. They started landing about 70 yds to our left so we moved down there. Then they started shorting us, so we moved up wind of our spread. After that 2 flocks landed in the dekes. We tried every trick I've ever used, heard about, or dreamed up, and nothin would make em do it. It was one of the most frustrating hunts I've ever had. It kills me when birds are workin, but I can't figure them out.

Justbob and I had the geese within 15-20 yards of us. This was in northern Saint Charles county. Did not seem a challenge.

i suspect this is the culprit. they had been feeding about a half mile west of where we could hunt although they didn't land there either tonight. dang geese.

Ah the turkeys of the sky. They are smart son of guns for sure. If they are workin the dcoys and not finishin. Might just be spread like not enough sleepers or not a big enough kill hole. Simple things I say like the sleepers. We will load the sleepers up in the spread gives them confidence its all good. Flag them all the way in too.

We mostly have feeders with some lookers mixed in. Probably need to get some sleepers I suppose. Flags worked amazing yesterday, it really got their attention from a long azz ways away...just wouldnt' come that last 60 yds.

We probably had them grouped to tight as well. Do you guys put the dekes around your layouts or way behind or out in front? We had them around us.

It depends on the lay of the land, and the wind direction and what part of the field the geese like to be in. Usually I bunch thelayouts in groups of 3 and fill in between the blinds with stubble to eliminate shadows and give the blinds a "softer" look. I have a madness about setting decoys and blinds but nobody complains when we shoot geese at 20ft.
