Saturday morning in Miami co IN was cold (14 degrees) calm and noisey going in at o dark thirty. I felt like with all the noise of walking in I most likely wont see a deer close...and I was right. I did see several including a nice buck cruising but all 200 - 300 yards from me across a picked bean field.
I got down at 10:30 wanting to find a place for a ground sit Saturday evening. I headed East to the creek bottom and started working my way South to where I wanted to sit that afternoon. As I passed the South edge of a little woods we call the 1st finger woods I look up on the hill and saw a rack moving in the waist tall grass that lines the South side of that woods. I am standing in a picked bean field with no cover between me and the buck. So without trying to get a better look I sneak back the way I came. Its 10:39 am.
The ground is still very very noisey but there was a South South East wind and I was on the North side of this buck. I decided to try a stalk despite the noisey conditions.
I make it across the bean field and into the North edge of the woods. I cant see the buck from where I am and I figure he heard me walking across the noisey field. But I remove my boots and start my final approach anyway. I just get to where I am going to crest the hill and Im still not sure if this deer is still laying there or not but all of a sudden he stands up 30 yards from me! He is facing almost dead away from from me and I dont want to shoot him at that angle. so I take another step to improve the angle and shoot...he takes one leap and goes down. Its 12:15pm.
I quickly reload and sneak up to where I last see him not knowing if he got up while I was reloading. I almost step on him in the tall grass. I am standing 2' from him and he is in his death throws gasping nothing moving but his mouth. I pull out my cell thinking Im going to take a quick pic...and he jumps up and starts to run away!! He is between me and the woods and I cant get him in the scope to get another shot! I was thinking that did NOT just happen!!!
So I watch him exit thru the East end of the woods and across a small field and go into the creek bottom. I shot him back because of the steep angle of entry so I thought maybe I just got guts. After looking at where he was laying I thought even more that the angle was off or something because there was watery blood where he was laying.
I have to go in the general direction of where he ran because its the only way to cross the creek. As I get to the end of the brush along the creek he is standing there looking at me from about 150 yards. He then turns and walks off and into another woods. I decide to back out and come back in the morning.
The next morning he was laying just inside the woods and as you can see I recovered him with no problems.
Nice 10 pointer
