Does anyone remember the issue I had opening day of firearms season? I shot at nice buck at about 40 yards and it bolted off into the woods. I saw one of its legs buckle, but it never went down. I searched high and low that evening and the next day in the rain, but never found one drop of blood, even with the help of two others. I called the neighboring landowner to get permission to look because I was sure it went that way, but didn't hear back from him until today, five weeks later. I was heartbroken when he told me that he had just listened to my message on his answering machine yesterday, and he had already located the deer several weeks ago and given it to someone else.

Here's where it gets good. He told me the name of the neighbor he had given it to. The neighbor supposedly was given permission to get the rack off of it because by the time they had found it, it had already been down 3 weeks. When I called that neighbor today, he was a true gentleman, and listened to my story. After I described my shot placement and the rack of the deer, he knew it was the one I had shot. He told me to come get my rack. I was elated.

He scored it to be around 140 for me, and it is the biggest one I have taken to date. It's got an 8" left brow tine, and some good mass in places. It sure would have been nice to have this beast in the freezer, as well as on the wall, but I'm just glad to finally have some resolution and know that I made a kill shot after all. :woot:

I'm glad to hear you found him, I know it isn't the way you wanted it to happen but it does go that way sometimes. Out of curiousity, how far did he end up going from where you shot him?

I guess I will just do a plaque mount. I can't afford a full mount on him at this stage. I think I will try to get him officially scored.

He went a total of about 150 yards from where I shot him. I walked up and down the fenceline looking into the neighbor's property cause I just had the feeling he was over there. Turns out he was only 40 yards onto them. He just couldn't be seen through all the timber.

You guys hit the nail on the head. I planned on making him up a nice batch of summer sausage or elk jerky or something. He is a true gentleman, and I enjoyed visiting with him yesterday. I am so proud of this rack because of the sentimental value. It was the first time my wife was actually with me when I took a buck, and it turned out to be my biggest so far. :claphands:

Be sure and get a "Donation Slip" from your local Conservation Agent for the rack!!!!!! Otherwise, the way I understand it, you're illegal there!!!:wave:
