    I found a huge old shell casing in a field. It is 4 1/2" - 5" long. As big around as my thumb... and is from a center fire weapon... it reads ... C 5 7 8... c and 8 at 12 o'clock and 6 o' clock position... 7 and 5 at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position.

What would this be from a war gun? It's made of old tarnished brass!!

Sounds like a 50cal. Might be 20mm depending on how big your thumb is.

    A .50BMG looks like a scaled-up .30/06, so does that one.

It's probably a .50 Browning, made for the M2 machine gun (Ma Duece). They were used on fighter planes in WWII, among other things. They are also used in ring mounts on tanks and trucks, among other things. They are also making rifles that will shoot them, too, among other things.:D
