My kids were out yesterday arrow head hunting. Had a great day. They found 8, with 6 in really great shape. They brought me a buckeye that is sprouting. I assume that is the begining of the root. Need some advice on how to plant. How deep, sunny or shade etc.

Not much help here other than put it in dirt .
I have about 14 I put in cold storage and they sprouted root . In the greenhouse they got 12 inches and now are turning brown and shriveling up .

I would say just put it in loose potting media not very deep and hope for the best. Sunny or shade wont matter if the root is just emerging other than a sunny place will warm up the media and accelerate things. I'd throw in an IBDU fertilizer or similar.

How do you tell buck eyes from doe eyes unless they're still in the head of the deer?

Are buckeye trees used for anything? I thought they were toxic for deer?

They do best with part sun. Treat like a dogwood for location. They bloom and are nice as an ornamental. They do drop the spikey nut clusters, so site it away from mowed/traffic areas of that's a concern.

Plant so the nut is at soil level.

Thanks for the help. I put it in potting material and placed on my grow light table with other plants. The root had sprouted when I planted it. Now the tree is sprouting. Will follow the above responses as soon as the weather breaks. Arrow head pics will be posted after she sends to me.

Here's a few of the older grandkids found Arrowheads. The are getting quite a collection. These are just a few that they have framed.
